In the wake of post-colonial and post-modernist thinking, ‘Eurocentrism’ has been criticized in a number of academic disciplines, including Translation Studies. First published as a special issue of Translation and Interpreting Studies 6:2 (2011), this volume re-examines and problematizes some of the arguments used in such criticism. It is argued here that one should be wary in putting forward such arguments in order not to replace Eurocentrism by a confrontational geographical model characterized precisely by a continentalization of discourse, thereby merely reinstituting under another guise. The work also questions the relevance of continent-based theories of translation as such along with their underlying beliefs and convictions. But since the volume prefers to keep the debate open, its concluding interview article also provides the opportunity to those criticized to respond and provide well-balanced comments on such points of criticism.

Honorable Mention, Latin American Studies Association Mexico Section Best Book in the Humanities After the end of the Mexican Revolution in 1917, postrevolutionary leaders hoped to assimilate the country’s racially diverse population into one official mixed-race identity—the mestizo. This book shows that as part of this vision, the Mexican government believed it could modernize “primitive” Indigenous peoples through technology in the form of education, modern medicine, industrial agriculture, and factory work. David Dalton takes a close look at how authors, artists, and thinkers—some state-funded, some independent—engaged with official views of Mexican racial identity from the 1920s to the 1970s. Dalton surveys essays, plays, novels, murals, and films that portray indigenous bodies being fused, or hybridized, with technology. He examines José Vasconcelos’s essay “The Cosmic Race” and the influence of its ideologies on mural artists such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. He discusses the theme of introducing Amerindians to medical hygiene and immunizations in the films of Emilio “El Indio” Fernández. He analyzes the portrayal of indigenous monsters in the films of El Santo, as well as Carlos Olvera’s critique of postrevolutionary worldviews in the novel Mejicanos en el espacio. Incorporating the perspectives of posthumanism and cyborg studies, Dalton shows that technology played a key role in race formation in Mexico throughout the twentieth century. This cutting-edge study offers fascinating new insights into the culture of mestizaje, illuminating the attitudes that inform Mexican race relations in the present day. Nos encontramos actualmente en una especie de tránsito que nos está llevando a un abandono o revisión minuciosa de un paradigma, el de la Modernidad, hacia otro que aún no alcanzamos a vislumbrar a plenitud. Este tránsito solicita una comprensión del momento por el que estamos pasando en diversos ámbitos de nuestra realidad, para ello el mejor recurso con el que actualmente contamos es el de la hermenéutica, que ni está totalmente restringida como lo puede estar un riguroso método, ni es totalmente especulativa de tal manera que quepa cualquier cosa, lo que le permite inmiscuirse en diversos ámbitos sin perder cierta rigurosidad, es decir, incursionar en espacios como la ciencia y la tecnología, la justicia, la ética, etc., y las posibles relaciones entre ellas, generando interpretaciones justificadas sobre nuestra situación actual desde una posición pluralista, para ensayar posibles retos de la filosofía para el futuro. Si bien este libro tiene como referente la diversidad cultural, también tiene a la vida cotidiana como un punto de partida central, el mundo de vida cuyas preguntas no logran ser respondidas por el mundo de la tecnología y su capacidad de comunicación, pues las posibles respuestas únicamente se logran viviendo, en la experiencia diaria, los medios de comunicación nos prevén de información, pero no nos dan experiencias pues éstas son individuales y concretas.
