This is the third in a series of statistical and empirical reports, compiled from quarterly situation reports, which provide basic data on the structure and functioning of life in Cuba. Cuba Annual Report: 1987 comprehensively examines domestic and international events that affected Cuba that year. The volume offers in depth reviews of Cuban foreign policy, the national economy, military allocations and manpower movements, political control, cultural developments, and ideological shifts. The narrative portions indicate which changes in these areas most concern the Cuban government. Cuba Annual Report: 1987 offers a greatly expanded coverage over past years. The volume provides Latin Americanists with a documentary summary of 1987 as well as a chronology of the year's events. As a unique feature in a reference work, the report analyzes these events, offering insight into them and their significance for the immediate future. Whatever opinions one may have on the current Castro government, this volume is now established as the one indispensable handbook for policy-makers and professionals of all persuasions. The information in the volume is drawn from a wide variety of publications -perhaps the most extensive collection in the world - and broadcasts that are largely unavailable to the scholarly and policy-making communities. Professor Jorge I. Dominguez of Harvard University has termed these Reports "first rate and free of manifest bias or slant." Prepared by the senior research staff of the Radio Marti office in the United States Information Agency, this volume is the richest single source of data on Cuba available in English or any other language.

Revolutionary Cuba written by Luis Martínez-Fernández and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-16 with History categories.

This is the first book in more than three decades to offer a complete and chronological history of revolutionary Cuba, including the years of rebellion that led to the revolution. Beginning with Batista’s coup in 1952, which catalyzed the rebels, and bringing the reader to the present-day transformations initiated by Raúl Castro, Luis Martínez-Fernández provides a balanced interpretive synthesis of the major topics of contemporary Cuban history. Expertly weaving the myriad historic, social, and political forces that shaped the island nation during this period, Martínez-Fernández examines the circumstances that allowed the revolution to consolidate in the early 1960s, the Soviet influence throughout the latter part of the Cold War, and the struggle to survive the catastrophic Special Period of the 1990s after the collapse of the U.S.S.R. He tackles the island’s chronic dependence on sugar production, which started with the plantations centuries ago and continues to shape culture and society. He analyzes the revolutionary pendulum that continues to swing between idealism and pragmatism, focusing on its effects on the everyday lives of the Cuban people, and—bucking established trends in Cuban scholarship—Martínez-Fernández systematically integrates the Cuban diaspora into the larger discourse of the revolution. Concise, well written, and accessible, this book is an indispensable survey of the history and themes of the socialist revolution that forever changed Cuba and the world.

Cuba S Second Economy written by Jorge Perez-Lopez and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Without doubt, Cuba is facing its most serious economic challenge in nearly thirty-five years of revolutionary rule. There is consensus that as the official, centrally planned economy has faltered, ordinary citizens eke out a living only by engaging in under-the-table, unrecorded, and mostly illegal activities. In fact, this "second economy" is growing by leaps and bounds. This volume sketches the contours of the very complex phenomenon of the second economy of socialist Cuba, and discusses its evolution over time, as well as the role that it may play in the transition to a market economy on the island. The economic crisis of the 1990s has propelled the second economy from behind the scenes to center stage. Not only have black markets mushroomed, but second economy activities connected to the free-market that the Castro government has traditionally discouraged or even prosecuted are now being incorporated into the government's own economic strategy. Self-employment, cultivation of individual plots, and the use of foreign currencies to buy or sell goods, are now promoted with considerable enthusiasm by the leadership. Perez-Lopez examines different ways of thinking about unregulated economic activities that have been set forth in the literature and concludes that the concept of the second economy is the most appropriate for Cuba. He brings together available information from a multitude of sources on the manifestations of the second economy in Cuba and of its operation. Cuba's Second Economy is a timely study of an economic system in crisis. It will be of interest to economists, political scientists, policymakers, and Latin America area scholars.

Democracy Delayed written by Juan J. López and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-22 with Political Science categories.

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, foreign policy analysts and international relations scholars expected communist Cuba to undergo transitions to democracy and to markets as had the Eastern European nations of the former Soviet bloc. But more than a decade after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Castro remains in power, with no sign that the Cuban government or economy is moving toward liberalization. In Democracy Delayed, political scientist Juan López offers a searching and detailed analysis of the factors behind Cuba's failure to liberalize. López begins by comparing the political systems of three Eastern European states—the former German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia, and Romania—with that of Cuba, in order to identify the differences that have allowed Castro to maintain his hold over the government and the economy. López also shows the various conditions promoting change, including the development of civil society groups in Cuba, and discusses why some U.S. policies help the possibility of democratization in Cuba while others hinder it. While the Catholic Church in Poland and the Protestant Church in East Germany fostered change, the Catholic Church in Cuba has not taken a defiant stance against authoritarianism but seems instead to be biding its time until Castro is out of the picture. In conclusion, López argues that a political transition in Cuba is possible even under the government of Fidel Castro. Some necessary conditions have been missing, but it is possible that U.S. policies could lay the groundwork for democratic charge.

First published in 1990. This text includes information of Cuba in 1986, split over four reporting quarters. The economic crisis, resulting from Fidel Castro’s traditional subordination of economic matters to international and political objectives, is hounding the regime and is weakening the appeal of Cuba as a model for developing countries.
