Ma per Amir e Noa è un palazzo dove possono vivere come un re e una regina, gi-rare per il salotto in mutande e fare lamore dappertutto, a qualunque ora, senza temere che il coinquilino rientri in anticipo. Dietro il muro del loro appartamento abita il padrone di casa, Moshe Zakian. Moshe ha soltanto due anni piú di Amir, anche se è già marito di Sima e padre di due bambini. Non parla granché, preferisce fare, aggiu-stando qualunque cosa: serrature, elettricità, tubature otturate. E sua moglie Sima, che al contrario parla sempre e ha la battuta pronta, è il suo grande amore. Si vede a chilometri di distanza. Nellappartamento di fronte vive il piccolo Yotam che si sente trascurato da quando Ghidi, il fratello grande, è morto soldato in Libano. Sua madre, infatti, non fa altro che singhiozzare e mormorare «Ghidi, oh Ghidi» circondata dalle amiche che cercano di calmarla. Nei paraggi si aggira Saddiq, il muratore arabo. Per prenderlo in giro, gli altri muratori lo chiamano Shaikh Saddiq, perché non sgarra di un millimetro quando si tratta di fare le misurazioni. Saddiq non ha una casa al Castel, ma vorrebbe averla, anzi riaverla. Nellappartamento sopra il bilocale di Amir e Noa, quello costruito come una volta, pietra su pietra, prima che arrivassero i coloni ebrei, vivevano, infatti, i suoi. Sotto il mattone sopra la porta dingresso, dentro un sacchettino avvolto nella carta da giornale, sua madre ha nascosto qualcosa di importante per lei che, sia lodato Allah, Saddiq vorrebbe riportarle indietro. Quattro case e un desiderio struggente di trovare il proprio posto nel mondo, nel momento in cui il proprio mondo Israele e le infinite anime che lo compongono è sconvolto dallassassinio del Primo Ministro Yitzhak Rabin: cosí potrebbe essere descritta questopera che ha rivelato il talento di Eshkol Nevo sulla scena letteraria internazionale.
