Revisión general de la vida y la obra de José Ortega y Gasset en la que se hace un análisis sobre cómo se va configurando la razón vital en los diferentes periodos de la vida del filósofo madrileño. Estos periodos son significativos del proceso de maduración de la razón vital y su conexión con la historicidad de la misma. Hay en la tesis, por un lado, un estudio del concepto de filosofía en Ortega donde se pone de manifiesto su función en toda vida auténticamente vivida, por lo que se refiere a la actitud vital que corresponde al filósofo. Por otro lado, un estudio sobre cómo toda auténtica filosofía no es más que un encuentro con la verdad, alétheia, en tanto que descubrimiento del ser de las cosas que, según Ortega, es su ser ejecutivo. A partir de este concepto de filosofía se pone de manifiesto que la verdadera manera de acceso al conocimiento es la razón vital. Por eso el autor madrileño se vio obligado a hacer una severa crítica de la razón pura propia de la modernidad. Igualmente, su planteamiento teórico le impuso la necesidad de buscar el punto de partida originario de cada uno de los niveles dela cultura, ciencia, ética y estética, como el método adecuado para alcanzar certezas que permitan servir de fundamento o todos los desarrollos teóricos posteriores. En este sentido, la tesis efectúa un estudio sobre la crítica orteguiana a la ciencia, y al realismo y el idealismo de la cultura occidental; igualmente analiza cómo Ortega fundamenta la ética en lo que él llama nuestro “fondo insobornable”, encaje inevitable de vocación y circunstancia , como único camino para llevar una vida auténtica consistente en plasmar nuestra vocación a pesar de los obstáculos que en toda existencia humana son frecuentes; por último, se hace un estudio de las concepciones orteguianas sobre el arte, con especial dedicación a la función cognoscitiva que el maestro le concedía al mismo, y otro apartado dedicado a la deshumanización de las corrientes artísticas de la época. El trabajo pretende dar una visión de conjunto del pensamiento de José Ortega y Gasset que ponga de manifiesto que, en realidad, se trata de un autor sistemático, aunque no en el sentido clásico de distribuir sus teorías en las parcelas en que tradicionalmente se divide la filosofía, sino desde el punto de vista de ser capaz de articular la totalidad de su obra en torno a una idea básica: la razón vital.
