La gran mayoría de estos textos están destinados a la infancia, como las fábulas de «La hormiguita», «El lobo bobo y la zorra astuta» o «Los caballeros del pez», las oraciones y coplas infantiles o las adivinanzas. Cecilia Böhl de Faber (1796-1877) fue una escritora española, más conocida por su seudónimo masculino Fernán Caballero, tras el que se ocultó para no ser menospreciada por sus contemporáneos. Fue representante del costumbrismo literario y su extensa obra se caracteriza por su finalidad didáctica y su defensa de la moral tradicional. Algunas de sus obras más célebres son «La Gaviota» (1849) o «Clemencia» (1852).

Cuentos adivinanzas y refranes populares plasma cómo España es tierra de tradiciones que tienen diferentes manifestaciones, con origen oral pero que se han recogido en muchas ocasiones de forma literaria, como es el caso, con la finalidad de su permanencia a lo largo del tiempo de manera cotidiana. Estas distintas expresiones de las tradiciones fueron recopiladas por Fernán Caballero, pseudónimo de Cecilia Böhl de Faber, en esta obra constituida por los siguientes capítulos: “Cuentos de encantamiento”; “Cuentos infantiles religiosos”; “Adivinas infantiles”; “Asuntos religiosos”; “Oraciones, relaciones y coplas infantiles”; “Refranes y máximas populares”; y, finalmente, “Adivinanzas y acertijos populares” con sus respectivas soluciones. Cabe destacar de esta obra su forma de crear cuadros rurales y de costumbres con un ambiente narrativo ligero e imitación romántica que hace placentera la transmisión e interiorización de estas tradiciones gracias a un tono a veces humorístico, y otras, satírico. Esta obra, tal y como la conocemos como recopilatorio, se publicó en Madrid en 1921 de manera póstuma a su muerte, sin embargo, algunas partes se publicaron en 1911 y 1914 de forma individual.
