La presente antología, preparada por Conrado Zuluaga, pretende ofrecer una somera pero cabal muestra de lo mejor que ha producido, en el terreno del cuento, la literatura colombiana en el último siglo. Una literatura que, iluminada por la figura de Gabriel García Márquez, se cuenta sin duda entre las que han dejado huella en el siglo recién concluido. Encontramos aquí cuentos de algunos de los que son tenidos por precursores del siglo XX, como Tomás Carrasquilla y José Félix Fuenmayor, considerados como sus maestros por muchos de los autores posteriores. De autores como Zalamea, Téllez, Gómez Valderrama o Cepeda Samudio, que precedieron a Gabriel García Márquez, naturalmente presente también en la antología. Cuentos de la excelente generación que surgió a la sombra del «boom» latinoamericano y bajo el peso que ello supuso, como Luis Fayad, Germán Espinosa o Rafael Humberto Moreno-Durán. Y también de la última generación de narradores colombianos, aquí representada por Julio Paredes, Enrique Serrano y Juan Gabriel Vásquez.
