"Pain and suffering are inevitable in this world. However, in a time where we have relatively easy and inexpensive access to over-the counter-painkillers, anesthesia, and opioids, it has become harder for us to know how to handle suffering when it cannot be medicated, numbed, or distracted away. The reality of suffering is particularly challenging for Christians who believe that suffering and death were defeated once and for all by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and who are yet called to live faithfully in the midst of suffering until the eschaton. In this thesis I offer St. Bonaventure's imaginative meditations on the passion (The Tree of Life and The Mystical Vine) as resources for the contemporary church. I argue that these texts are oriented towards transformation into the likeness of Christ. As the readers focus their attention on the suffering, death, and resurrection of the god-man Jesus Christ and grow in love for him, they become - by grace- sharers in what they see. More important than offering a subjective, internal experience of being joined to Christ, these texts offer a way to become real, embodied participants in his life, death and resurrection. This participation necessarily involves becoming like Christ in his suffering; suffering is part of the process of appropriating the victory over evil that Christ (the New Adam) accomplished on our behalf. While Bonaventure's invitation to suffer with Christ is uncomfortable, it is by no means masochistic: suffering is not valuable for its own sake, but because of its role in the process of becoming Christlike, that is, fit for the coming kingdom where suffering will have no place. Neither is Bonaventure's invitation hopeless: the same Christ who suffered and died was resurrected and glorified; those who join in the first will share with him the second. By reframing human suffering in the light of the Christian story, these texts train us to suffer faithfully in this world as we await the world that is to come." --Abstract.

How should Christians live? On the one hand, some very legalistic Christians stress the importance of keeping all the rules—that you must do this and never do that if you want to prove you are really a Christian. On the other hand, there are those who reject the whole idea of rules or traditions in the church and see the point of the Christian faith as setting us free from the institutionalized religious burden. But Paul addresses these two competing views by showing us a far better way—a truly Christian way to live our lives. It is the way of the Spirit of God given to us through Christ: "Walk by the Spirit . . . led by the Spirit . . . live by the Spirit . . . keep in step with the Spirit." That is the heart and soul of Christian living. It is the center and secret of what it means to be a person who belongs to Christ. Pastor and scholar Christopher Wright invites us to live a life in step with the Spirit by cultivating the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These nine chapters, each addressing a different fruit, each conclude with questions for contemplation or discussion. Feed on the Word of God, grow in Christlikeness, and live a fruitful life.

After we’ve come to faith in Christ, God leaves us in this world for a very clear purpose: his own glory. But how are we to glorify God for the rest of our lives? The Bible reveals that God has laid before every Christian two infinite journeys which we are to travel every day: the internal journey of growth into Christlike maturity, and the external journey of worldwide evangelism and missions. This book is a road map for the internal journey, laying out how we are to grow in four major areas: knowledge, faith, character, and action. In this book, we’ll learn how God grows us in knowledge, faith, character, and action. We’ll also discover that spiritual knowledge constantly feeds our growing faith, faith will transform our character, our transformed character will result in an array of actions more and more glorifying to God, and our actions will feed our spiritual knowledge. This upward spiral will lead us to become more and more like Jesus Christ in holiness. And not only will this book help us understand Christian growth in detail, it will also give us a passion to grow every day for his glory.

Must we stumble through sorrow and tragedy without understanding or is there a lighted way--a path--through suffering? Elisabeth Elliot plots the treacherous passage through pain, grief, and loss a journey most of us will make many times in our life. Through it all, she says, there is only one reliable path, and if you walk it, you will see the transformation of all your losses, heartbreaks, and tragedies into something strong and purposeful. In this powerful moving book, Elisabeth Elliot does not hesitate to ask hard questions, to examine tenderly the hurts we suffer, and to explore boldly the nature of God whose sovereign care for us is so intimate and perfect that he confounds our finite understanding. A Path through Suffering is a book for anyone searching for faith, comfort, and assurance.

Must Christians suffer? Why do the righteous suffer? Why do bad things happen to "good" people? What are the benefits of adversity? This book provides Biblical answers to these questions with encouraging testimonies that will rekindle your hope and inspire your faith to endure all hardship and come out of it a better person, not a bitter person! Smith Wigglesworth noted, "Great faith comes out of great fight. Great testimony is a product of great test. Great triumph is the result of great tribulation." What you are going through is intended to make you, not to mar you. It is called PROCESS. God can use all good and bad things that ever happened to you to work together for your good (Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 11:29)!

"The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast." 1 Peter 5:10 Suffering comes to us all. It may be disease or debilitation, pain or persecution. Our difficulties may be invisible to others or impossible to hide. Sometimes we suffer because of our Christian witness. Other times it's simply part of living in a fallen world. But suffering affects us all, in ways we don't always anticipate. Christians today are often not prepared to suffer well and have a shortsighted view of pain and trials. Ken Boa shows how God uses suffering to shape his children for eternity and to grow them in Christlike character. The book of 1 Peter tells us suffering is both a guarantee and comparatively brief; we shouldn't be surprised when it comes to us. The nature of our affliction is not as important as our response to it. God is at work through our hardships and wants to use them to prepare us for eternal life. Suffering can make us bitter or better. Rediscover living hope, present joy, and a glorious future.

This book helps us choose ways of living that are grace-filled and redeeming. Cultivating Christlikeness is about the bold adventure of United Methodists celebrating and living into a grand vision that includes everyone in God’s extravagant embrace. Jesus invites us to partner in the work of transformation, new birth, and resurrection in every aspect of our lives. Together we can step into a future showered by God’s multiplying love. Paul Chilcote mines his decades of study, prayer, and devotion to Christian practices to share his vision for how we partner with God to make the world more loving and just. In Cultivating Christlikeness, he weaves the threads of insight and appreciation with special attention to Wesleyan ways of loving God and neighbor that can change us and change the world. With his gentle direction, we discover with new appreciation how 18th-century John and Charles Wesley illumine our 21st-century quest to befriend Jesus, who frees us to live into and by the grace of God. Chilcote’s book is a practical guide. He guides us with a mentor’s insightful nudge as we explore essential Wesleyan teachings about God and the beloved community. He helps us know how to share these understandings with our families and neighbors, and more importantly, he points us to ways to live out our commitments with purpose, courage, and joy. The framework and flow of Cultivating Christlikeness make it easily adaptable for group discussion and individual use. It includes a plan for a two-day retreat for those eager to join in a more intensive experience of mutual engagement to renew their spirits and discover fresh ways to grow in love and grace. The book is a companion to Chilcote’s, Multiplying Love (Abingdon Press), which casts the theological vision that animates this practical spiritual guide. And it is an updated and expanded revision of an earlier work entitled, Wesley Speaks on Christian Vocation, originally published by Discipleship Ministries, then reissued by Wipf & Stock.

Holy Scripture requires holy reading. Encounter an ancient but fresh way of reading the Bible. Learn from Augustine, Anselm of Canterbury, Bernard of Clairvaux, and others. Experience a structured and simple way to focus on Christ, listen to the Spirit, and rest in God's love. Jesus is the point of reading the Bible. Christians read Scripture to encounter Christ and be conformed to his image. Scripture is no mere human text; it is God's living word. So how should we read it? For Christians throughout the centuries, the answer has been lectio divina—"divine reading." em Lectio divina is a sacramental reading. It aims to take us more deeply into the life of God. Through practicing the four movements of emlectio divina—attentive reading, extended meditation, prayerful reflection, and silent resting—we have a structured and simple way to focus on Christ, listen to the Spirit, and rest in God's love. We no longer simply read the words of Scripture; instead, we read the face of God in the eternal Word.

This book is meant to illuminate Godlike faith through defining it, giving clarification where it comes from, revealing how to walk in it, and divulging what it is capable of doing. God’s soldiers must remember that we are in the army of the Lord. We are fighting a supernatural enemy bent on our destruction. Only Godlike faith knows that Satan has no authority or power over us. That knowledge equips us with the ability to overcome the satanic designs that are aimed at our destruction. However, many Christians are not walking in Godlike faith or living a victorious life in Christ. Many are overwhelmed by defeat and discouragement, and are allowing Satan to take authority or power that he does not have. It’s time to walk in the truth that Christ took his authority and gave it to God’s soldiers. As we learn to walk in the mind of Christ, we have Godlike faith that gives no place to Satan, his demons, or his diabolical plans to destroy us. By the time this book is read to the end, God’s soldiers will take authority over all satanic designs, change the entailment, and live a victorious life through Godlike faith.
