Cultivating Minds is a ground-breaking unification of the ideas of Simmel and contemporary perspectives in cultural psychology. The theoretical framework proposed is based on an integration of core philosophical, sociological, and psychological ideas from the intellectual traditions of pragmatism, socioculturalism, constructivism, and transactionalism. The primary focus of this work is on cultivation as a metaphor for identity formation. According to this idea, each and every human agent is an active producer of its own development and identity. The cultivation model expands existing sociocultural perspectives by elaborating further how an individual's cultivation of the sociocultural environment is mediated through artefacts and objects, a concept exemplified by the identity processes demonstrated by graffiti artists. The idea of the cultured mind has profound implications not only for cultural psychology but also for theories of identity and, of course, development. It affects the way we understand the formation of the self and, in the end, the growth of the person. The result is a theory which captures the convergence between identity, culture and development in new and far-reaching ways.

This book describes the nurturing of a variety of learning styles through the use of the Logo programming approach, especially for persons with special needs. The book interweaves case descriptions of microcomputer uses with theoretical analysis, to provide educators with a framework for thinking about their students' thinking. Descriptions of the computer work of average and above average students mingle with accounts of the computer work of children with problems, exploring ways of using computers to build computational environments that match individual needs and learning styles. The book emphasizes using the computer as an information prosthesis, and describes how teachers can understand more about how a student learns through observation of students engaged in Logo activities. Chapter titles are as follows: "Structured Discovery,""The Computer as Empirical Window,""A Changing Context for Learning,""A Contrasting Style of Reasoning,""Beyond the Information Given,""Autism and the Computer,""Metaknowledge,""Sources of Change,""Building Good Artifacts That Structure 'Messing About',""Visual Narratives,""Logo and Individual Working Style,""Individual Working Style and Academic Failure,""Learning Disability and Spatial Curricula,""A Structured Environment for Autistic Children,""Autism and Cognitive Themes,""Educating the Physically Disabled,""Determination and a Will To Achieve,""Assessing the Cognitive Effect of Cerebral Palsy,""Learning Potential," and "Teachers and the Developing Logo Culture." Cultivating Minds to Own Thyself was created to benefit those who are interested in discovering who they are, their purpose and who is serious about taking ownership of the life they have been provided. Within those pages, I have challenged many readers to hurdle many of the obstacles that may be standing in their way, preventing them from achieving their goals and dreams. Most importantly, I have challenged them to "Cultivate their Mind," so they can become their best and make a difference in the lives of those in their home, community and in the world. This self-discovery workbook is here for those who have accepted the challenge to cultivate their mind to own who they are, as I have done and many others who have read Cultivating Minds to Own Thyself. This workbook is created to help challengers determine how they feel, personally, about personal issues, family issues, spiritual issues, social issues or priorities, rather than following the opinions of family, friends, the neighborhood or peer pressure. This is a guide to self discovery. Let the challenge begin...

Warning: Using this book could be hazardous to your ego! The slogans it contains are designed to awaken the heart and cultivate love and kindness toward others. They are revolutionary in that practicing them fosters abandonment of personal territory in relating to others and in understanding the world as it is. The fifty-nine provocative slogans presented here-each with a commentary by the Tibetan meditation master Chogyam Trungpa-have been used by Tibetan Buddhists for eight centuries to help meditation students remember and focus on important principles and practices of mind training. They emphasize meeting the ordinary situations of life with intelligence and compassion under all circumstances. Slogans include, "Don't be swayed by external circumstances," "Be grateful to everyone," and "Always maintain only a joyful mind." This edition contains a new foreword by Pema Chodron.

A guide to the Tibetan Buddhist practice of lojong meditation—or mind training—as a way to pause, reflect, and discover the true meaning and value of life In this society, with its hurly-burly pace demanding of our time, it is ever so easy to let life slip by. Looking back after ten, twenty, thirty, years—we wonder what we have really accomplished. The process of simply existing is not necessarily meaningful. And yet there is an unlimited potential for meaning and value in this human existence. The Seven-Point Mind Training is one eminently practical way of tapping into that meaning. At the heart of the Seven-Point Mind Training lies the transformation of the circumstances that life brings us, however hard as the raw material from which we create our own spiritual path. The central theme of the Seven-Point Mind Training is to make the liberating passage from the constricting solitude of self-centeredness to the warm kinship with others which occurs with the cultivation of cherishing others. This Mind Training is especially well-suited for an active life. It helps us to reexamine our relationships—to family, friends, enemies, and strangers—and gradually transform our responses to whatever life throws our way
