This work has been constructed as a daily companion to deepen and fortify the foundation of your interior life as taught by the tradition of the Church. Cultivating the Spiritual Life is intended to serve as a day-by-day guide for you to live a devout life in the world to point the way to an enlightened, well-balanced, and authentic piety. Taken from the writings primarily of that great 20th century master of the spiritual life, Fr. Adolphe Tanquerey, and further enhanced with writings from various doctors of the Church, saints, mystics, and theologians, Cultivating the Spiritual Life is a daily companion for those searching to grow closer to Christ by understanding how the spiritual life works in us. The purpose of this work is to transcend any particular school or preference of spirituality, but rather to show what is universally common to the Catholic spiritual life and what each soul must know to succeed in his own earthly pilgrimage to God. Fr. Tanquerey composed a complete and orderly summary of questions on the spiritual life which can serve as a devotional treatise for spiritual reading by his clear, lively, practical, and careful writing that serves to help foster a truly devout life while avoiding being dry and being controversial. Cultivating the Spiritual Life should be read by taking the teachings of the Church as a whole and finding the common principles and rules for strengthening the basic fundamentals that the Church has always taught. Fr. Tanquerey wrote those for all those "who are seeking to live a thoroughly Christian life and thus fit themselves to be living, breathing models of Christ in the world today by a deep interior life."

The world, contrary to popular understanding, is not less religious but in many ways more religious than ever. Two issues seem to be emerging in this resurgence. One is the need for a spiritual center that gives integration, a sense of inner peace, ethical guidance, and meaning and direction in life. It is present in most of the world's great religious traditions and present elsewhere as humans seek to find their way in a confusing, conflicted, and rapidly changing world. Accompanying this quest for a deeper spirituality is the "God question" and a desire to understand the divine in new ways that match a contemporary worldview. This book, Mindful Spirituality, invites the reader to find a thoughtful, credible, and satisfying way to address these two major concerns. While starting within a Christian frame of reference, the book is not exclusive, but ecumenical and interfaith in spirit. It is especially helpful to those with no set spiritual pathway and those disenchanted with traditional approaches that seem out of date and for another era. In a deep and sacred way, it invites the reader to reach upward for a thoughtful way of understanding transcendence, to open inward for a mature and gratifying spirituality, and to expand outward in responsible and loving service.

The Mystic Heart chronicled Brother Wayne Teasdale's journey into a multifaceted spirituality blending his traditional Catholic training and the Eastern way of sannyasa (Indian monkhood). A Monk in the World tells what the journey has meant for him — living as a monk outside the monastery, integrating teachings from the world's religions with his own Catholic training, combining his vigorous spiritual practice with the necessities of making a living, and pursuing a course of social justice in a major American city. In telling his story, Teasdale shows how others can find their own internal monastery and bring spiritual practice into their busy lives.

Cultivating the Spirit THIS GROUNDBREAKING WORK IS BASED on a five-year study of how students change during the college years and the role college plays in facilitating the development of their spiritual qualities. Students, the authors argue, grapple with the big questions in life: Who am I? What are my values? Do I have a mission in life? Why am I in college? What kind of person do I want to be? What sort of world do I want to help to create? Their answers to these questions help determine their academic and career choices and are tied to the development of personal qualities such as empathy, caring, and social responsibility. The study finds that, while students' religious engagement declines during college, at the same time they become substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively egaged in a spiritual quest. Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study provides strong evidence pointing to specific experiences during college that can contribute to students' spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in college is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.
