Excerpt from The Cultivation and Preparation of Coffee for the Market Though in the following pages I do not pretend to teach my planter reader how to plant his coffee or how to manage his estate, nor do I pursue the wish of a profitable literary composition or elegant rhetorics, I hope nevertheless to have brought to light some vital points in connection with the preparation of coffee for the market by giving in an intelligible manner first of all how to avert losses, and secondly how to handle the curing outfit to its full advantage. If any slips are to be found, pray do not believe that it is due to negligence on my part, but simply to the fact that this is my first attempt in writing publicly in a language that differs from my own, both in origin and race. Please forgive my bold attempt. By taking these remarks into account, the planter will, I hope, appreciate my desire of compiling the following pages in his interest. Excerpt from Coffee Its History, Cultivation, and Uses Having from his earliest business associations been personally connected with the Coffee-trade, the writer has always been greatly interested in collecting anything relating to the history, cultiva tion, or uses Of this great staple. Long impressed with the idea that the mass of statistical figures that accumulate from day to day, in the many circulars and market reports received by those engaged in the importation and sale of coffee, tend rather to con fuse and detract from the importance Of this constantly increasing branch Of commerce, the following pages are intended to give such general information as may perhaps interest not only those who are familiar with the business, but also that multitudinous class to whom coffee now has become an indispensable beverage. Excerpt from Coffee: From Plantation to Cup; A Brief History of Coffee Production and Consumption I have endeavored to tell the story of coffee in a practical way, so as to make the information valuable alike to consumers and dealers. I have been induced to add to the innumerable com pany Of books from the fact that there seemed to be a want for a work which, besides furnishing statistical and historical matter relative to the coffee-plant, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the world's coffee supply, and the mode of preserving and preparing the coffee-bean so as to best secure all those qualities which make coffee the favorite beverage with most Of the civilized nations of the earth. My reliance has been chiefly upon twenty years' experience as a dealer, and such in formation as was to be gathered from a trip around the world. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to many books for facts re garding coffee culture, and historical matter relating thereto, and also to a large circle of business acquaintances for valuable statis tical information. To mention them specifically is hardly pos sible, and would be of little interest to the general reader. It is, however, but just that I should here recognize the many courtesies. Excerpt from Coffee in America: Methods of Production and Facilities for Successful Cultivation in Mexico, the Central American States, Brazil and Other South American Countries, and the West Indies Throughout the world there is a constant and rapid increase in the consumption of coffee. Although there has been a marked increase in the production of this berry in Central and South American countries, the rising prices indicate that the supply is still below the demand. These facts have naturally turned attention to this industry in those regions where the coffee plant thrives, and has prompted many inquiries from persons seeking investment regarding favorable locations, prices of lands and general information upon the subject. To answer fully the many inquiries received at this Bureau on this subject, is the object of this bulletin. Incidentally, the coffee production of the Old World is noted, but attention is chiefly directed to the lands, climates, soils and other natural conditions of growth of plant, methods of propagation, cultivation, handling and marketing of this product in the countries on this Continent, to which it seems probable the world must look for any increase in the present supply. The coffee plant, indigenous to Asia and Africa, has found its true habitat in the New World, where its production is already many times greater than in the Eastern Continent. Messrs. Schoffer & Co., of Rotterdam, estimated the world's total production in 1884 at 681,314 tons, of which Brazil alone produced 371,429 tons, or 61,544 tons more than one-half the entire product. Java, Sumatra and Celebes produced 108,743 tons. Since that time the proportion in favor of America has constantly and immensely increased; the Old World having hardly increased its production, while in Brazil the crop in 1892 reached about 500,000 tons, and the other American countries had shown, in certain cases, a still greater percentage of growth. Excerpt from Coffee: Production, Trade, and Consumption by Countries The different co ee producing countiies can be classified into four general classes as regards increase or decrease in production: (1) Brazil, Where production has increased very rapidly and has more than kept pace With the increase in consumption; (2) Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, the Guianas, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and the West Indies, where the production has gradually increased until recently, but in late years has remained stationary owing to the limited area suitable for coffee culture and to the great increase in production in Brazil; (3) Africa and Arabia, where the area and modes Of cultivation and transportation are limited, and where production, having passed through various phases, now remains nearly stationary; (4) Asia (excepting Arabia), which includes the Dutch and British East Indies, and the Philippine Islands, where co mee was early grown. And at an early date controlled the world's markets, but which can not at the present time compete with that grown in newer territories and in late years Shows a marked decrease in production. Excerpt from Brazil's Coffee Industry Brazilian coffee production, harvesting, and processing methods differ from those of most Latin American countries. As a result, Brazilian coffee has a unique taste and aroma. Partly because of these differences and partly because Brazil's arabica coffees account for nearly half the coffee on world markets, the arabicas are classed as Brazils if they come from there and as milds if they originate anywhere else. Brazils are intermediate in price and quality between the better grade mild coffee of Colombia and Central America and the much-lower-priced robusta coffees produced in Africa.
