This book is the product of the 2nd World Conference on Environmental History, held in Guimarães, Portugal, in 2014. It gathers works by authors from the five continents, addressing concerns raised by past events so as to provide information to help manage the present and the future. It reveals how our cultural background and examples of past territorial intervention can help to combat political and cultural limitations through the common language of environmental benefits without disguising harmful past human interventions. Considering that political ideologies such as socialism and capitalism, as well as religion, fail to offer global paradigms for common ground, an environmentally positive discourse instead of an ecological determinism might serve as an umbrella common language to overcome blocking factors, real or invented, and avoid repeating ecological loss. Therefore, agency, environmental speech and historical research are urgently needed in order to sustain environmental paradigms and overcome political, cultural an economic interests in the public arena. This book intertwines reflections on our bonds with landscapes, processes of natural and scientific transfer across the globe, the changing of ecosystems, the way in which scientific knowledge has historically both accelerated destruction and allowed a better distribution of vital resources or as it, in today’s world, can offer alternatives that avoid harming those same vital natural resources: water, soil and air. In addition, it shows the relevance of cultural factors both in the taming of nature in favor of human comfort and in the role of the environment matters in the forging of cultural identities, which cannot be detached from technical intervention in the world. In short, the book firstly studies the past, approaching it as a data set of how the environment has shaped culture, secondly seeks to understand the present, and thirdly assesses future perspectives: what to keep, what to change, and what to dream anew, considering that conventional solutions have not sufficed to protect life on our planet.

L'11 maggio 1728 le autorità massoniche di Londra emisero, a suo nome, una deputation (un mandato) per la costituzione, in Napoli, di una loggia dal titolo «Perfetta Unione». Ignoriamo se le «colonne» di tale «officina» furono effettivamente «innalzate» oppure siano rimaste confinate in un progetto mai realizzato. Di certo bisognerà attendere all'incirca 15 anni per trovare traccia di una regolare loggia installata nella capitale duosiciliana. La massoneria meridionale si sviluppò, dopo la prima metà del '700, per l'intero territorio regnicolo, erigendo Templi in tutte le principali città, spesso coinvolgendo nella sua opera di proselitismo anche centri di remota periferia. Si calcola che, tra gli anni '80 e '90 del secolo XVIII, il numero delle logge nel mezzogiorno d'Italia era ben superiore alle 120 unità con migliaia di entusiasti adepti. Dopo i volumi sulla città di Napoli (II e III) e sulla Sicilia (V), le pagine del presente testo intendono illustrare un fenomeno che, malgrado ripetute condanne pontificie e governative, attecchí in profondità anche nelle estreme province (Terra di Lavoro, Molise, Abruzzi, Puglie, Basilicata e Calabria), soffermando la propria attenzione sui principali esponenti delle locali logge, in gran parte «dimenticati» o «ignorati», ma degni di essere ricordati come custodi di un'antica sapienza mediterranea e come antesignani di un risorgimento nazionale. Ruggiero di Castiglione è nato a Napoli nel 1940. Pubblicista, ha insegnato alla L.U.I.S.S. e all'Università di Studi di Cassino (Frosinone). È Autore de «I segreti della magia», in collaborazione con Alberto Cesare Ambesi (1972), «A tela ordita Dio mandò il filo» (1975), «Corpus Massonicum» (1a ediz.: 1984; 2a ediz.: 1989; 3a ediz.: 2007), «Alle sorgenti della Massoneria» (1988), «Il maestro di Cagliostro: Luigi d'Aquino» (1989), «Domenico Cirillo e la Massoneria di fine '700 a Napoli» (1990), «Una villa massonica nella Napoli del '700», «La Pietatella: appunti per un percorso iniziatico-alchemico nella cappella Sansevero di Napoli» (1999), e i primi quattro volumi de «La Massoneria delle Due Sicilie e i “fratelli” meridionali del '700» (vol. I - 1a ediz.: 2006; 2a ediz: 2008; vol. II - 2008; vol. III – 2010; vol. V - 2011). Già direttore responsabile del periodico di cultura e arte varia «L'incontro delle genti», ha collaborato con molte riviste specializzate come «Arcana» ed «Hiram». Ha partecipato a numerosi convegni internazionali. Alcuni suoi contributi sulla Repubblica Napoletana del '99 sono stati letti a Nizza e a Parigi presso importanti centri letterari. È stato relatore al Convegno di Studi su «Raimondo de' Sangro e la sua opera a trecento anni dalla nascita: 1710-2010», organizzato dall'Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici (Napoli, Palazzo Serra di Cassano). Attualmente ricopre gli incarichi di presidente dell'Associazione culturale «VIRBIO» e della Biennale per i Giovani Artisti Campani (giunta alla 4a edizione), nonché quello di vice-presidente nazionale della L.I.D.U. (Lega Italiana dei Diritti dell'Uomo.
