Essay from the year 2024 in the subject History - Asia, , language: English, abstract: This paper delves into the cultural and geological heritage of Sindh, a province in Pakistan with a history that traces back to the Mohenjo-Daro civilization in 2500 BC. Sindh’s rich cultural tapestry is woven from influences of immigrants from northern India, Gujarat, Punjab, Arab countries, and Baluchistan. The province, with an area of 47,569 square miles, is bordered by Bhawalpur in the north, the Arabian Sea in the south, the Hallar range in the east, and a sandy desert in the west. Geologically, Sindh’s landscape has been shaped by significant epochs, with the Indus River playing a pivotal role long before the Himalayas' formation. This study highlights the importance of Sindh in both national and international heritage protection strategies due to its unique historical and natural resources. The enduring silhouette of Sindh, marked by the ancient Indus River, reflects its significance in the timeline of human civilization.

Shikarpoor Historic City (Sindh, Pakistan), nominated to the 2008, 2010, and 2014 World Monuments Fund Watch List, historically enjoyed great significance as a pivot of caravan trade due to its strategic geographic location, distinguished as the gate of Afghanistan, Khelat, Khorasan, and Central Asia. Recognizing its historic significance, the Government of Sindh's Department of Culture, through a notification in September 1998, declared 'Shikarpoor Historic Town' a protected heritage site under the 'Sindh Cultural Heritage Preservation Act 1994', furthermore in March 2012 declaring 1,203 properties, including open spaces, urban elements, and buildings, as enlisted sites. Mere notifications have, however, proved insufficient to curb ongoing destruction of the city's unique historic fabric. Established in early decades of the 17th century, Shikarpoor developed as a multicultural urban centre, reaching a zenith of prosperous times during the 18th and 19th centuries, after which developments in Sindh caused a gradual decline in its economic and socio-political strength, drastically transforming its urban composition. Remnants of Shikarpoor's unique past are now evident only through its surviving historic fabric, presently threatened by insensitive developments and a lack of appreciation. This book ventures to capture the lost spirit of this fading legacy, lamenting upon its potential for an economic and urban revival through a heritage conservation campaign.

Every one lives within cultural context. Every human society has its recognizable cultural style, which shapes the behavior of its members. Sindh is pretty rich in terms of historical and ancient societies including remains of old cities like Moen Jo Daro in Larkana, graveyard in Makli, forts of Hyderabad, Umer Kot and Rani Kot in District Jamshoro. Today the entire area of Sindh is dotted with prehistoric and proto-historic settlements. Although exploration of all archaeological and cultural sites in Sindh is yet to become complete, yet innumerable relics and monuments so far discovered narrate the tale of continuous human activity in Sindh throughout the ages. Secondly it is also a proven fact that the cultural influence of the great Indus valley civilization of the third millennium BC is still prevalent among the people of Sindh in the third millennium AD. Many of the ancient sites of sindh have great historical and cultural significance. By virtue of their great past, unique architecture and eventful history, they deserve to be valuable cultural heritage of sindh. This ethnographic study was conducted in the Rani Kot Fort which is situated in district Jamshoro.
