This book is an interdisciplinary collection of essays examining Goethe’s Faust and its derivatives in European, North American, and South American cultural contexts. The story of Don Juan first appeared in writing in seventeenth-century Spain, reaching Russia about a century later. Its real impact, however, was delayed until Russia’s most famous poet, Alexander Pushkin, put his own, unique, and uniquely inspirational, spin on the tale. Published in 1830, TheStone Guest is now recognized, with other Pushkin masterpieces, as part of the Russian literary canon. Alexander Burry traces the influence of Pushkin’s brilliant innovations to the legend, which he shows have proven repeatedly fruitful through successive ages of Russian literature, from the Realist to the Silver Age, Soviet, and contemporary periods. Burry shows that, rather than creating a simple retelling of an originally religious tale about a sinful, consummate seducer, Pushkin offered open-ended scenes, re-envisioned and complicated characters, and new motifs that became recursive and productive parts of Russian literature, in ways that even Pushkin himself could never have predicted.

Diese Arbeit eröffnet neue Einblicke auf die vielinterpretierten Texte Der Zerbrochene Krug, Amphitryon und Michael Kohlhaas sowie Penthesilea und damit in die Ordnung der neuzeitlichen Welt. Diese interdisziplinäre Arbeit beruht auf der anhand des systemtheoretischen Ansatzes herausgearbeiteten Engführung von Recht und Literatur. Die hochabstrakt scheinenden Thesen und Theoreme Luhmanns werden für die Deutung von Kleist-Texten und durch sie hindurch für ein spezifisches Verständnis der Probleme von Neuzeit und beginnender Moderne fruchtbar gemacht. Thematisch steht eine Motivkonstellation im Mittelpunkt, die Kleists Texte leitmotivisch durchzieht: das Spannungsverhältnis von Liebe und Recht. Auch für den systemtheoretisch nicht geschulten Interpreten ist schnell einsichtig, dass es sich hier um Antipoden handelt, die gleichwohl Gemeinsamkeiten aufweisen. Die Affinitäten zwischen dem Literatur- und dem Rechtssystem sind der rote Faden der Untersuchung. Die bisherige Sekundärliteratur zu Rechtsproblemen in Kleists Werken lässt anders als die vorliegende Untersuchung den Aspekt weitgehend unberücksichtigt, dass Recht ein Kommunikationsmedium ist. Unablässig arbeitet Kleist an Dramaturgien von Wandlungs-, Umsturz-, Krisen- und Schockerfahrungen. Die gebrechliche Einrichtung der Welt ist sein Dauerthema. Und seine kluge Einsicht besteht darin, dass Neuzeit und frühe Moderne lernen müssen, auf ewige Gültigkeiten zu verzichten - dass, um mit Kleists Zeitgenossen Hegel zu sprechen, in Zeiten des Schwindens von Letztfundamenten nur eines verlässlich und konstant bleibt: die "Furie des Verschwindens".

Gegenstand der Analysen sind künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Darstellungen von Metamorphosen sowie deren historische Veränderungen von der antiken Mythologie über frühmittelalterliche Hagiographie bis zum Posthumanismus Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts, wobei ein Schwerpunkt auf literarischen Darstellungen liegt. Zudem werden Verwandlungen betrachtet, welche die Produzent*innen und Rezipient*innen der jeweiligen Metamorphosen selbst durchlaufen. Die untersuchten Verwandlungen beziehen Flora, Fauna und menschliche Tiere ein. Ovid, Maria Sybilla Merian, Kafka, Deleuze und Guattari spielen dabei wiederholt eine Rolle und erfahren damit ebenfalls Metamorphosen. Die Autor*innen nehmen z. B. Metamorphosen bei Korallen, Bären, Menschen, Insekten, Fischen oder Schmetterlingen in den Blick. Sie fragen u. a. nach Metamorphosen der Stimme und des Blicks oder untersuchen die Ästhetik der Metamorphose in naturhistorischen Tierdarstellungen der Frühen Neuzeit sowie Korallenfragmente in Kunstkammern des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Schließlich werden das Konzept des Tier-Werdens und das Prinzip der Assemblage sowie die Funktion von Metamorphosen für Gesellschaftsdarstellung, -kritik und -utopie betrachtet. In den künstlerischen Beiträgen werden mediale Umgestaltungen von Tierrepräsentationen im Medium der Collage präsentiert und die skulpturale Metamorphose eines Ledersofas zurück in ein Kalb vorgeführt.
