Habituados a que la escolarización universal y prolongada sea una experiencia natural para nosotros, es fácil perder de vista que eso ocurre de manera artificial dentro de un sistema educativo que tiene el poder de regular quiénes entran en él, cómo lo hacen, qué caminos se prevén para distintos tipos de alumnos, qué se espera de ellos o cómo trabajarán los profesores. Haber vivido esa experiencia no es suficiente para entenderlo como una recreación sociohistórica singular que se ha extendido - con algunas peculiaridades - por el mundo entero, traspasando fronteras y culturas. Presumir que su estructura y su peculiar funcionamiento es la respuesta coherente a unas necesidades sociales bien definidas supondría desconocer que es el resultado histórico de fuerzas que se suman y se contradicen; de proyectos, conflictos y resistencias que han desembocado en una realidad cultural que podría haber sido de otra forma. La reflexión que desarrolla el autor nos hace ver que, detrás de Ia aparente naturalidad de su existencia y de la solidez de su estructura, el sistema educativo tiene una historia en la que se han abierto caminos de progreso y de inclusión social, aunque, al mismo tiempo, también ha segmentado, jerarquizado e impuesto reglas que dan como resultado efectos en sentido contrario. El discurso de Antonio VIÑAO, para iluminar lo que es una compleja realidad, se mueve necesariamente en las fronteras borrosas entre la historia, la política educativa, la organización de las instituciones y las teorías sobre el cambio en educación. Así podemos ver la continuidad y discontinuidad entre las propuestas que dieron forma al sistema escolar heredado y las que hoy se aplican en las reformas que quieren imprimirle otra dirección.

La función socializadora de la escuela es entendida como aquella que prepara a los ciudadanos para la vida en sociedad, es una función que implica el reconocimiento y valoración del pluralismo. La escuela puede ser entendida también como la institución donde culmina la maduración social de los niños y jóvenes dentro de la cual se pueden identificar diferentes procesos de socialización, en su forma y características. En este marco conceptual se ubica la investigación de las culturas escolares argentinas que conforma la presente obra a partir de un estudio de cinco casos: una escuela secundaria laica estatal y cuatro escuelas con diferentes orientaciones religiosas: católica, evangélica, judía humanista y musulmana. En la investigación se abordaron, entre otros, los siguientes aspectos: Los procesos de formación moral en el espacio escolar. Los modos en que se lleva adelante la formación ciudadana en las clases, la educación moral y cívica que transmite la escuela. Los vínculos entre lo moral y lo religioso, y lo moral y lo legal. Las formas de disciplina que desarrolla la escuela. Las presiones culturales externas.

This book provides a “context” of discussion for researchers and educational experts in order to rethink the relationship between actors, practices and borders within the educational contexts. The research in educational psychology has often challenged the concept of “educational context”. According to the different theoretical frameworks, the construct of contexts, their borders and the dimensions to be taken into account have all been defined in different ways. The book offers a reflection that goes from theory to practice and backward from practice to theory. The main research questions the book addresses are how actors, i.e. teachers, parents and students, educators and professionals, with their own identity and social representations, build their educational practices or their shared cultural spaces where knowledge is generated, defining the borders of the educational contexts. For nearly half a century, research on education systems has been increasingly popular. However, this popularity was long restricted primarily to internationally linked policy makers and education planners, often backed up by international organizations such the OECD but also by governmental or para-governmental organizations within the individual countries. These institutional affiliations provided education research with a specific character that often centres on notions such as excellence, efficiency, or standards. The specific comparative character of this policy-driven research agenda triggered the development of suitable research techniques such as comparative statistics and pertinent sub-disciplines such as cognitive psychology. Backed-up by powerful global institutions, this agenda purported to be rather unique, and it tended to ignore the cultural complexity of the educational field and those research approaches that address this complexity. This volume includes different historical, cultural, and sociological approaches to the education systems and to questions as to how research on education systems can be undertaken beyond the parameters of the existing research agenda. They demonstrate how pertinent problems of research on education systems can only be tackled taking an international and interdisciplinary approach with regard to both research questions and methods concerning education systems.
