No issue now occupies contemporary evangelicals more than the role of culture in biblical interpretation. In Culture and Biblical Hermeneutics the author not only analyzes the current debate but also makes a significant contribution to it. This volume grapples with what the author calls "the challenge that historical and cultural relativism poses to the hermeneutical process when applied to the authoritative Scripture." He accomplishes his goal admirably by exploring both the origin and the current state of biblical hermeneutics and by developing a biblical theology of hermeneutics and culture.

Biblical Exegesis And The Formation Of Christian Culture written by Frances M. Young and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-04-28 with Religion categories.

This book challenges standard accounts of early Christian exegesis of the Bible. Professor Young sets the interpretation of the Bible in the context of the Graeco-Roman world - the dissemination of books and learning, the way texts were received and read, the function of literature in shaping not only a culture but a moral universe. For the earliest Christians, the adoption of the Jewish scriptures constituted a supersessionary claim in relation to Hellenism as well as Judaism. Yet the debt owed to the practice of exegesis in the grammatical and rhetorical schools is of overriding significance. Methods were philological and deductive, and the usual analysis according to 'literal', 'typological' and 'allegorical' is inadequate to describe questions of reference and issues of religious language. The biblical texts shaped a 'totalizing discourse' which by the fifth century was giving identity, morality and meaning to a new Christian culture.

In March 1992, a very unusual gathering of biblical scholars from around the world took place on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Under the auspices of the 'Casassa Conference' (named for Fr Charles Casassa SJ), these scholars came together to discuss papers and interact with each other on the issue of culture and biblical interpretation. Coining the term 'Cultural Exegesis', these scholars and students debated whether the cultural backgrounds and experiences of the readers of the Bible can not only influence conclusions about contemporary theological issues, but even influence the methods and results of historical and literary critical methodologies.

Bruce Malina provides the foundation for in-depth biblical interpretation using the tools of cultural analysis. As one of the pioneers in this field of biblical studies, Malina has taken the work of sociologist Mary Douglas, interpreted her "Group/Grid" model of cultural analysis, and applied it admirably to biblical studies and interpretation. He refines a new methodology of scholarly biblical interpretation. Since cultures differ, proper interpretation of one culture by another requires a method to compare and contrast the cultures. He has designed such methods and models using the principles of the Douglas method of sociological study. Malina's charts, models, and illustrations serve as study tools for other biblical scholars. His careful thorough work will enable these scholars to incorporate these new models for study into their own methods of biblical interpretation.

The refugee that has come to your church, the pastor of the immigrant church in your town, and you yourself all come before the same Bible, even the same verse, and walk away with completely different understandings and applications. In an increasingly globalized and multicultural world, how can we learn to see beyond our own cultural influences, understand those of others, and learn from each other in order to better understand and apply the word of God? How do we stay faithful to the text when our contemporary cultural perspective is so different from the original author's? This book will enable you to understand the common pitfalls and dangers related to cross-cultural hermeneutics while also equipping you with principles and real-life examples for how to interpret Scripture in such situations. Additionally, given the fact that our world is increasingly digitized and people are less and less likely to read, we will consider the issue of oral hermeneutics and how those who can't read or choose not to read can interpret Scripture faithfully.

The third edition has been updated throughout to account for new developments in the field and to incorporate feedback from professors and students. Exercises have also been updated and streamlined.
