This is a work of first class liturgical scholarship, addressing itself to the pressing pastoral need of cultural adaptation. --Rev. Charles W. Gusmer author of And You Visited Me: Sacramental Ministry to the Sick and the Dying The work of Father Anscar Chupungco on the Cultural Adaptation of the Liturgy is an indispensable work at this time when each country, and especially the 'new' nations of the developing world, attempt to experiment with the adaptation (inculturation) of the liturgy in their own cultures. Without scientific understanding of the history and tradition, such attempts are doomed to either caprice or defeat. This book ought to become the manual of any adaptation. --Rev. Adrien Nocent, OSB Professor, Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselm, Rome In this wide-ranging study, Father Chupungco looks at the way the liturgy was adapted in various cultures in the past. For us, the Constitution on the Liturgy outlines the theological, liturgical, and cultural principles needed when the people of God adapt liturgy to our many cultures in the modern world. --Rev. Patrick Byrne National Liturgical Office, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops In an historical overview, Chupungco first establishes how cultural adaptation is a part of the Roman Church's liturgical heritage. He goes on to articulate principles of adaptation from theological, liturgical, and cultural perspectives. His presentation is based on a blend of scholarly documentation and astute observation of current liturgical problems. The volume makes a solid contribution to both the theoretical and the practical dimensions of pastoral liturgy. --Rev. Gerald V. Lardner, SS St. John Vianney Church, Kenmore, Washington Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB, is the author of 'Liturgical Inculturation: Sacramentals, Religiosity, and Catechesis' and 'Shaping the Easter Feast'. He is also the editor of 'Handbook for Liturgical Studies'.

How are we to proclaim Christ in different cultures? This question was central to a landmark study on worship and culture conducted by the Lutheran World Federation between 1992 and 1999. Much has changed in the years since then: the world today more than ever is a multicultural global village. Worship and Culture revisits that LWF study and publication, shedding new light on the question from recent theological and sociological scholarship to expand and enrich the texts in the original three-volume work. This book includes texts from the main statements that came out of the original project as well as updated essays from some of the original contributors. It also adds new essays, prayers, and hymns to the conversation, inviting readers to consider what the life of the church should look like in today’s hybrid, multicultural world. Eucharist And American Culture written by Dennis Chester Smolarski and has been published by Paulist Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Religion categories.

In the prayer for unity described in chapter 17 of the Gospel of John, Jesus prays that "all may be one." This theme recurs in the New Testament and in writings throughout Christian history. In contrast, U.S. society is characterized by "individualism" as evidenced by various recent scholarly publications and surveys. Americans are less likely now to participate in social groups than they were a couple of decades ago. As a result, some aspects of good liturgy, such as common posture or communal singing, are increasingly perceived as "counter-cultural." Eucharist and American Culture is a unique resource that considers the impact of American individualism upon the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. Short, insightful chapters offer key sociological points and liturgical understanding as well as summarize recent academic works and research results of Robert Bellah, Robert Putnam, and Jean Twenge. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is consulted regarding the celebration of the liturgy. Suitable for use as an undergraduate religious studies resource, this book will also find a place in courses in religion and culture and sociology of religion, as well as in seminary formation programs and programs for parish liturgical ministers. Liturgical Inculturation written by Anscar J. Chupungco and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Religion categories.

Perhaps nothing is as important to the future of the Church as continuing to make the liturgy meaningful to those who celebrate it. Inculturation, the dynamic translation of the typical editions into the cultures of local Churches, is the key. Inculturation as a branch of liturgical study has a dauntingly wide scope. It covers the areas of history and theology, liturgical and cultural principles, process and methods, sacraments and sacramentals, Liturgy of the Hours, liturgical year, liturgical music, liturgical arts and furnishings, and such related topics as popular religiosity and catechesis. So where does the average pastor, liturgist, or student begin? With this volume the reader is introduced to the different technical terms expressing the relationship between liturgy and culture (indigenization, incarnation, contextualization, adaptation, acculturation ... ). The subsequent discussion on the question of sacramentals, popular religiosity, and liturgical catechesis explains how these disparate topics share the same basic concern of inculturation. Throughout the book the focus is on method. Method encompasses both how one may remain true to the liturgy while also considering what culture offers the liturgy or requires of it. The question of how creativity relates to inculturation is also answered. For the serious student of the liturgy, whether or not you serve a culturally diverse community, this work provides foundations, principles, and methods for creating a liturgy of the people and for the people.

Inculturation Of Christian Worship written by Phillip Tovey and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-20 with Religion categories.

Originally published in 2004. Inculturation - the creative and dynamic relationship between the Christian message and culture or cultures - is of interest to many churches throughout the world, particularly since the Second Vatican Council made it part of the Roman Catholic agenda. This book looks at the question of the inculturation of Christian worship, particularly in the Eucharist. Looking at the relationship of worship and culture requires insights from both theology and anthropology; Tovey develops the tools to interconnect perspectives into an interdisciplinary exploration of different models of inculturation. Inculturation of Christian Worship is both interdisciplinary and ecumenical in approach. Case studies are drawn from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, African Independent Churches, The Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. While there is a focus on Africa for particular examples, the issues are discussed in a world wide context.

How do the arts inform and cultivate our service to God? In this addition to an award-winning series, distinguished philosopher Bruce Ellis Benson rethinks what it means to be artistic. Rather than viewing art as practiced by the few, he recovers the ancient Christian idea of presenting ourselves to God as works of art, reenvisioning art as the very core of our being: God calls us to improvise as living works of art. Benson also examines the nature of liturgy and connects art and liturgy in a new way. This book will appeal to philosophy, worship/liturgy, art, music, and theology students as well as readers interested in engaging issues of worship and aesthetics in a postmodern context, including Christian artists and worship leaders.

This collection on Christian feast culture is closely connected with the first Dutch national research program, Liturgical Movements and Feast Culture, which was conceived and initiated in 1995, and coordinated by the Interuniversity Liturgical Institute, headquartered in Tilburg. The collection marks the conclusion of the program, and through a report of work in progress is intended to present a sort of sampler of Dutch liturgical studies for an international forum. Against the broader background of modern multidisciplinary liturgical studies and the theme of liturgical movements, the dynamic of cultus and culture, Christian feast culture in the year and in life forms the central theme of the collection. A number of choices have had to be made as this developed. For example, the collection almost exclusively focuses on Western Christian rituality, in which, within that Western perspective, broader ritual contexts are brought into the discussion. The collection is divided into four parts. In addition to an introduction (part I) to situate the topic, part II contains a series of systematic, theoretical explorations, which present diverse but also converging disciplinary approaches, generally illustrating them as well. Part III comprises historical explorations. Part IV comprises studies in contemporary liturgical practice, including the liturgia condenda. Each of the parts II-IV has an introduction in which an effort is made to offer some lines of synthesis and evaluation.
