In the last decade, interest has returned to the study of a cultural, rather than bureaucratic, model of the organization. Trice (emeritus, Cornell U. School of Industrial and Labor Relations) argues that essential to this study is recognition of occupations as potent subcultures, which adapt and interact within the context of the organization. He uses as examples a variety of occupations from pipe welders to concert pianists. Paper edition (unseen), $16.95. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Occupation Culture is the story of a journey through the world of recent political squatting in Europe, told by a veteran of the 1970s and '80s New York punk art scene. It is also a kind of scholar adventure story. Alan W. Moore sees with the trained eye of a cultural historian, pointing out pasts, connections and futures in the creative direct action of today's social movements. Occupation Culture is based on five years of travel and engaged research. It explicates the aims, ideals and gritty realities of squatting. Despite its stature as a leading social movement of the late twentieth century, squatting has only recently received scholarly attention. The rich histories of creative work that this movement enabled are almost entirely unknown.

This fascinating book examines the concept of culture from a unique perspective--that of individual occupational therapists who have worked in environments very different from those in which they were educated or had worked previously. In Occupational Therapy Across Cultural Boundaries, six occupational therapists relate their experiences living and working in a foreign culture. Each author describes the daily demands placed upon her through immersion into a different way of life and discusses the environmental challenges she had to overcome to be able to live and work successfully. Many of the cultural differences the authors faced forced them to reassess and reconstruct their most basic assumptions of both personal and professional life as they discovered that activities and theories common or applicable in one culture are not necessarily translatable into another. The authors also analyze culture across treatment areas in occupational therapy practice, including mental health and physical disability, with both adults and children. Both beginning and experienced occupational therapists and occupational therapy students will find much valuable information in Occupational Therapy Across Cultural Boundaries. Whether interested in examining occupational therapy's application to non-Western cultures, or actually contemplating practicing in a different culture, readers will benefit from learning about the experiences of the authors. This unique book is also helpful for occupational therapy students wishing to examine the philosophy of occupational therapy or the significance of culture to human occupation. Professors will find it useful as an ancillary textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in occupational therapy on topics such as theory, occupation across cultures, or meaningful activity.

Iconographies of Occupation is the first book to address how the “collaborationist” Reorganized National Government (RNG) in Japanese-occupied China sought to visualize its leader, Wang Jingwei (1883–1944); the Chinese people; and China itself. It explores the ways in which this administration sought to present itself to the people over which it ruled at different points between 1939, when the RNG was first being formulated, and August 1945, when it folded itself out of existence. What sorts of visual tropes were used in regime iconography and how were these used? What can the intertextual movement of visual tropes and motifs tell us about RNG artists and intellectuals and their understanding of the occupation and the war? Drawing on rarely before used archival records relating to propaganda and a range of visual media produced in occupied China by the RNG, the book examines the means used by this “client regime” to carve out a separate visual space for itself by reviving prewar Chinese methods of iconography and by adopting techniques, symbols, and visual tropes from the occupying Japanese and their allies. Ultimately, however, the “occupied gaze” that was developed by Wang’s administration was undermined by its ultimate reliance on Japanese acquiescence for survival. In the continually shifting and fragmented iconographies that the RNG developed over the course of its short existence, we find an administration that was never completely in control of its own fate—or its message. Iconographies of Occupation presents a thoroughly original visual history approach to the study of a much-maligned regime and opens up new ways of understanding its place in wartime China. It also brings China under the RNG into dialogue with broader theoretical debates about the significance of “the visual” in the cultural politics of foreign occupation.
