Future Needs Wisdom written by Helga Nowotny and has been published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-11-06 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Wisdom means learning to live with ambivalence and to embrace uncertainty Helga Nowotny’s memoir provides a detailed account of her life, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of a woman who defied convention in the male-dominated field of science. From her early days in science and technology studies, where she faced bureaucratic hurdles, to her influential role in shaping the European Research Council, Nowotny offers a candid look at her career. She shares personal stories of navigating the complexities of academia and policy, revealing the uncertainties and contingencies that shaped her life and work. This memoir resonates with anyone who has pursued a path less traveled, and offers a glimpse into the resilience and ambition required to succeed in challenging environments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Future Needs Wisdom is not really a memoir, nor is it an intellectual history, nor is it entirely a personal reflection or a summative philosophy. It is, in fact, all of these things fused together: her life, her scholarship, her thoughts, her triumphs, her misgivings, and above all, her hopes and utopic aspirations. —Anthony Elliott, Distinguished Professor, University of South Australia A fascinating memoir about an exemplary life. Exemplary because the encounters and accomplishments (as a scientist and as a leader of scientific institutions) have been so exceptional. Exemplary also because Helga Nowotny’s story offers an example of a woman’s path that will be inspiring inside and outside sociology. —Elena Esposito, Professor of Sociology, Universität Bielefeld I learned so much from reading this book written by a scholar known for her exceptional sharpness, insatiable curiosity, good judgment, foresight, and of course, wisdom! I urge researchers from across the disciplines to make time for this book, which imparts so many life lessons. —Michèle Lamont, Harvard University An account of a remarkable life full of diversions and detours that has given her a polymathic outlook of great wisdom and insight into the big problems of the day. —Peter Ho, Senior Advisor, Centre for Strategic Futures and former Head of Civil Service, Singapore

Zinc For Coin And Brass written by Hailian Chen and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-26 with Business & Economics categories.

Hailian Chen’s pioneering study presents the first comprehensive history of Chinese zinc—an essential base metal used to produce brass and coin and a global commodity—over the long eighteenth century. Zinc, she argues, played a far greater role in the Qing economy and in integrating China into an emerging global economy, than has previously been recognized. Using commodity chain analysis and exploring over 5,800 items of archival documents, Chen demonstrates how this metal was produced, transported, traded, and consumed by human agents. Situating the zinc story within the human-environment framework, this book covers a broad and interdisciplinary range of political economy, material culture, environment, technology, and society, which casts new light on our understanding of early modern China.

Sustainable Development The Cultural Perspective written by Gerhard Banse and has been published by edition sigma this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Culture categories.

"This current volume is a result of the Seventh and Eighth International Forum on Sustainable Technological Development in a Globalizing World. The Seventh Forum was held June 9-12, 2010 in Berlin. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology hosted the event, which was organized around culture and sustainability. What we each value as a society, as a country, in our culture, is what we want to protect. What is sustainable is only what we value. This applies all the more to sustainable development which is planned for long time scales and therefore to go beyond individual sustainable technology solutions as well as economic and political cycles. What we hold in high regard is the result of cultural influences. Consequently, we need cultural change in the sense of sustainable development in order to secure sustainability pathways in the long term. The key question arising is whether and how this change can be brought about. The following Introduction leads us into the specific discussion. At the end of the Seventh Forum, participants concluded that more specific case studies would be useful and recommended that the Eighth Forum provide a focus for case studies. Since the remainder of the Eighth Forum, held March 8-10, 2011, in Melbourne, Florida, focused on Alternative Energy with oral papers not really appropriate as written papers, it was decided to include the case studies in combination with those papers from Berlin to provide a holistic discussion of culture and sustainability. That is the concept for this volume."--P.13-14.
