Are the disciplines of education ghosts of a productive past or creative and useful forms of inquiry? Are they in a demographic and organisational crisis today? The contribution of the ‘foundation disciplines’ of sociology, psychology, philosophy, history and economics to the study of education has always been contested in the UK and in much of the English-speaking world. But such debates are now being brought to a head in education by the demographic crisis. Recent research has shown that with the an ageing population of education academics, in ten years' time, there could be very few disciplinary specialists left working within faculties of education in UK universities. But does that matter and is the UK no more than a special case? How does this ‘crisis’ look from Europe where the disciplines of education are more embedded, and from the USA with its more diverse higher education system? In this book, leading scholars – including A.H. Halsey, David Bridges, John Furlong, Hugh Lauder, Martin Lawn and Sheldon Rothblatt – consider the changing fortunes of each discipline as education moved away from the dominance of psychology in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s as a result of the growing importance of the other disciplines and new social questions, and how the changing epistemological and political debates of the last twenty years haves resulted in their progressive demise. Finally, the book confronts the question as to whether the disciplines have a place in education in the twenty-first century. Om de publieke opinie tegen slavenhandel en slavernij te keren, namen voormalige slaven soms zelf het woord. In het Engelse taalgebied verschenen ervan af de late achttiende eeuw tientallen autobiografieën van ex-slaven. Een deel van deze teksten werd, in vertaling, ook in Nederland uitgegeven, zelfs tot ver na de afschaffing van de slavernij. Marijke Huisman volgt de sporen van een aantal slaven autobiografieën door Groot-Brittannië, de Verenigde Staten en Nederland. Zij onderzoekt de rol die deze getuigenissen speelden in de productie van kennis over slavernij en het slavernijverleden. Het resultaat is een boeiende interpretatie geschiedenis die begint in 1789 bij de anti-slavernijbeweging en via onder meer de Aprilbeweging, de Harlem Renaissance, Black Power, de tweede feministische golf en de 'canon wars' voert naar actuele debatten over de omgang met het koloniale slavernijverleden ende 'slavernij' van moslimvrouwen.

Annemieke van Drenth onderzoekt aan de hand van de geschiedenis van de Haagse Idiotenschool hoe speciale kinderen in de loop van de negentiende eeuw ontdekt werden. Dominee Cornelis E. van Koetsveld richtte deze eerste school voor speciaal onderwijs op met steun van de zeer betrokken koningin Sophie. Kinderen die niet mee konden komen in het gewone lager onderwijs werden er onder de noemer 'idioot' opgenomen. Idiotisme werd niet langer als ziekte gezien, maar als stagnatie in de kinderlijke ontwikkeling. Prikkeling van de zintuigen moest de innerlijke wereld van het kind doen ontwaken. Erkenning van idiotisme als sociaal syndroom maakte speciale kinderen tot object van zorg. Met veel geduld werden hen basale zaken aangeleerd. De groeiende aandacht voor speciale kinderen onderstreepte niet alleen de idee van normaliteit, maar stimuleerde ook het verlangen om álle kinderen te onderwijzen. De consequenties daarvan zien we tot op de dag van vandaag terug in ons schoolsysteem.
