This book employs the figure of curation—the selection, arrangement, and display of objects, concepts, and things—to explore the cultures of platform capitalism. Considering its rise in the global art world as an authorial, meaning-making activity and an organizational-entrepreneurial endeavour, it looks at curation as the interweaving of innovative concepts, elaborate storytelling, and trusted experts leaking out from galleries to hashtags. Its logic encompasses diverse spheres ranging from high-brow art and the fashion world to low-brow experience economies and economies of authenticity, from confidence cultures and relationship gurus to algorithmic spectacles. More than an economy, “curate and be curated” is a diffused imperative amidst the disorienting spread of information that digital platforms enable: What to post, what to wear, what to eat, what friends to have, what music to hear, what films to watch, what places to visit, what socks to choose, and what opinion to have about serious issues like climate change, military coups, AI, genetics, space colonization, and cryonics, or everyday issues like football, fashion, and diet. Drawing on critical platform theory, material culture, and multi-sited ethnography, the book examines curated worlds of coolness, authenticity, and inspiration, including the luxury fashion brands Vetements and Balenciaga, Airbnb food experiences, and the figure of the life coach. The book argues that the curatorial imperative endorses an aspirational class imaginary and the idea that handling self-narratives is a strategic means of socialization that can assist upward mobilities as well as neoliberal narratives of well-being, promotion, and success. This book will be of key interest to academics, researchers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of cultural studies, media studies, communication studies, curating, contemporary art theory, critical management studies, and art history, as well as to more general readers interested in new media, platforms, and digital culture.

This book examines the contemporary relationship between Hollywood and China as case studies that help to define a new era in Hollywood film industry, style, and economics, which is termed the ‘post‐postclassical’ period. Centred around a case study of Legendary Entertainment, the analysis shows how the studio adopted and adapted its global strategies in order to gain access to and favour within the Chinese film market, and how issues of censorship and financial performance affected the choices they made. Demonstrating Legendary’s identity as a ‘post‐postclassical’ studio and examining how this plays into its China‐strategy, this book explores how this particular case and the necessary analysis of wider political economic relations offer a periodisation of the contemporary Hollywood‐China relationship. This book will interest students and scholars of media and film studies, as well as academics whose research interests include global cinema, Hollywood, Chinese cinema, transnational cinema, and film industry studies.

Global Film Policies written by Ruby Cheung and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-29 with Political Science categories.

Global Film Policies challenges conventional analyses of film policy as a stand-alone public policy confined within national boundaries and usually focused on supports for film production. The book argues for a more multi-faceted approach, extending beyond national boundaries and broadening its scope to recognise how other forms of policy pertain to film, including tax, labour, language and education. A team of experts in various areas of film and media studies critically analyse specific areas of film policy and engage with other public policy programmes, related concepts and/or phenomena. Each chapter brings together a general discussion of the conceptual and critical issues at stake, with specific references to particular territorial or historical contexts, institutions and policy initiatives that illuminate the more general issues. Case studies from different continents illustrate how film-related policies work with other public policies to maintain their influence not just on the film sector but also society more generally. This book will be an important resource for scholars and students studying global film policy in the areas of film, media or creative industries and business.

This book explores the impacts of digitization and sector internationalization on national drama production and their consequences for industry, audiences, and domestic storytelling. Using Australia as a case study, it provides a systematic evaluation of the efficacy of cultural policy intended to support the production and circulation of national drama from 2001–2024. During the first two decades of the 21st century, new digital distribution technologies transformed the business of television worldwide, bringing conditions of abundance that ended mass media logics grounded in scarcity of content and providers. Digitization upended longstanding norms around the funding, production, and circulation of national television drama radically changing the ecosystem that had shaped Australian screen industry cultural policies. This book’s analysis of the responses of policymakers, broadcasters, production companies, and screen agencies to television’s transformation evaluates their collective impacts on Australian television drama. It explains how 21st-century dynamics undermined cultural policy supporting the production of Australian drama with cultural value, leading to catastrophic falls in productions hours and titles. This book argues that the scale of disruption caused by digitization causes to transnational and national television urgently requires a bold re-imagining of cultural policy instruments intended to support the production of national drama in Australia. This account will be of interest to screen industry practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and, more generally, to anyone wondering whatever happened to Australian television drama.

This open access book explores the multiple forms of curatorial agencies that develop when museum collection digitisations, narratives and new research findings circulate online. Focusing on Viking Age objects, it tracks the effects of antagonistic debates on discussion forums and the consequences of search engines, personalisation, and machine learning on American-based online platforms. Furthermore, it considers eco-systemic processes comprising computation, rare-earth minerals, electrical currents and data centres and cables as novel forms of curatorial actions. Thus, it explores curatorial agency as social constructivist, semiotic, algorithmic, and material. This book is of interest to scholars and students in the fields of museum studies, cultural heritage and media studies. It also appeals to museum practitioners concerned with curatorial innovation at the intersection of humanist interpretations and new materialist and more-than-human frameworks.

The Algorithmic Age Of Personality written by James Yékú and has been published by MSU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

As the affordances of authorship and reading practices on social media become deeply mediated by algorithmic curation, they encourage closer attention to the author's personality as fundamental to literary production. The Algorithmic Age of Personality: African Literature and Cancel Culture challenges any lingering utopianism in the role of digital media in African cultural productions by exploring how algorithms engender a culture of outrage, conflict, and personality-driven and ego battles that distract from aesthetic and ethical evaluations of literary texts. In Yékú’s careful attention to how contemporary African literary practices are significantly marked by the extractivist and affective logics of social media algorithms, he articulates the current state of debating in the critical universe of African literature and connects this to the phenomenon of “cancel culture.” Rather than a Manichean understanding of cancel culture, Yékú illustrates how the politics of both conservative and liberal polarization shape what can and cannot be said in online commentaries on African literary forms. The outcome is a work that situates postcolonial classics by Chinua Achebe and Joseph Conrad in online debates on cancel culture and decolonization, while responding to social media discussions on Western literary prizes, ethnicity, and sexuality involving writers like Soyinka, Ngũgĩ, Wainaina, and Adichie.
