Since 1980, clinical psychologists and other professionals have gathered in Merseyside each year for the "Annual Merseyside Course in Clinical Psychology". The aim of this annual event is to offer post qualification training and a forum for discussion in areas of current clinical interest. Over the years, the course has attracted national and international speakers and attenders of the highest calibre, plus up-to-the-minute reports on current research. In August 1984, the course was held, for the first time, in the beautiful old city of Chester. As always, the papers were presented by leading clinicians and researchers in their respective fields; once again, this included several contributions from Merseyside psychologists. Since 1981, the proceedings of this conference have been published as "Current Issues in Clinical Psychology". The present volume - Volume 4 - covers four major areas of current interest: The Child and Therapy; Rehabilitation Across the Specialties; New Directions for Psychology and the Law; and Addictive Behaviors. Each of these areas must be relevant to the work of almost all clinical psychologists, at various times. The volume closely reflects the order and content of papers presented at the 1984 conference, although it also includes one paper (by Guliz Elal-Lawrence) written specially for this publication. The 1984 conference was widely acknowledged to be another succes- both academically and socially - and I hope that this volume fully conveys the interesting and stimulating ideas and information enjoyed by those who attended.

In January 1980 a 'Refresher Course in Clinical Psychology' was held in Liverpool. The aim of the course was to apply a contemporary perspective to issues of significance and interest to clinical psychologists in Britain, and more specifically to afford the opportunity for past graduates in clinical psychology from Liverpool University to meet together to share their working experiences. Following the success of this event it was decided by the Mersey Regional Group of Clinical Psychologists to embark upon a long term project; The Annual Merseyside Course in Clinical Psychology, as a means to provide a post-qualification training forum for practitioners of clinical psychology and related profess ions. In the tradition of the refresher course, it was designed to impart to it~ delegates and to readers of this book, the most recent ideas in a variety of fields of enquiry within clinical practice and theory. The growing emphasis on post-qualification training from within the clinical psychology profession marks an important milestone in its development and the inception of this course reflects this growth by fulfilling its further purpose of providing a regular platform from which national and international innovations and developments can be presented and discussed.

This is the third volume in the series of books based on the Annual Merseyside Course in Clinical Psychology. In common with its predecessors its aim is to present a number of topics of interest to practitioners, researchers, trainers and trainees in the field, with the intent not only to inform but variously also to question and to guide further enquiry. Selection for this volume has taken a somewhat different stance to the previous two. Whereas in former volumes an attempt has been made to cover standard areas of general and scientific interest to psychologists and others in related professions, such as anorexia nervosa, forensic issues, long term care, mental handicap, community psychology, anxiety and de pression, in this one issues which are of equal relevance but not necessarily of equal prominence in psychological texts, are included. We have not, however, neglected those areas more readily recognized as of major clinical import which are being progressively covered in this series. This year we have the section 'Bereavement and the Care of the Dying'. Although for many this may not be a main focus, it is a subject that few helpers do not encounter either directly or indirectly with their clients. It would be impossible for this subject to not reflect the most human side of the caring professions, and it is perhaps in this field that the objective/subjective dilemma of the clinician can be seen in its most acute form.

This book is the second volume in the series "Current Issues in Clinical Psychology", which is designed to build into a composite text of the field of clinical psychology. The contents of the series are based on the post-qualification training conferences held each autumn in Merseyside. These events, organised by a sub-group of the training committee of the Mersey Regional Group of Clinical Psychologists, are unique in that they are the only annual psychology conferences in Britain focussing exclusively on clinical areas. The opening paper of Volume 1 of the series emphasised the impor tance of the present disposition towards sustained clinical training for practising psychologists. The series "Current Issues in Clinical Psychology" represents a contribution to this trend by offering practitioners an opportunity to assimilate innovations in clinical theory and practice, in the young but vigorously developing discipline of clinical psychology. In order to provide a forum for contemporary issues and also to produce complementary texts of lasting value, it has been necessary to carefully select both the theme of each symposium and contributors able to fulfill these aims.

`This is a competently edited, reader-friendly publication which fills a previously empty niche in the market. Every applied psychologist should have a copy well within arm's length' - British Journal of Educational Psychology Applied Psychology: Current Issues and New Directions is an exciting new textbook and a perfect resource for students taking either a focussed degree in applied psychology or a module as part of a wider psychology degree program. Given its breadth of coverage it should also be essential background reading on courses looking in depth at one of the many areas of professional psychological practice. The book is divided into two parts. In Part One, the book reviews the traditional branches of applied psychology (i.e. clinical, educational and occupational psychology); some relative newcomers (counselling psychology, forensic and health psychology); and some less obvious areas (careers guidance, counselling, academia) addressing such issues as training, future trends and developments within each field. Part Two offers discussion of more generic issues facing professional psychologists including the role of research and evidence-based practice in everyday work; trends in higher education; and continuing professional development. The book concludes with a `Round-Table' discussion involving leading psychologists commenting on trends and new directions in their respective fields. Key features of this book: - Consistently pedagogical throughout - chapter summaries, questions for reflection and discussion and annotated further reading in every chapter - Comprehensive coverage - all areas of applied psychology included - Related to the `real world' - by reviewing the issues and offering practical advice, this text should help prospective applied psychologists make informed decisions about their careers.
