At the dawn of the twenty-first century, education about and through the media has become a worldwide phenomenon, and is playing an increasingly important role in educational reform. The theory and practice of media education have profited greatly from recent and intensive development and application of new information and telecommunications technologies. Consequently, the importance of media and information literacy is taking on an even greater urgency. With this in mind, the contributors to this volume survey what has taken place over the last decade in different parts of the world, examine the current state of theoretical, conceptual, and research development, and consider where media education is going and where it ought to go. With two-thirds of its 22 contributions coming from outside the United States, Media Literacy in the Information Age is a genuine international effort, with many leading media and information educators in the world taking part. The work converts the notion of globalism from a slogan into a working hypothesis. The concerns in this volume are with literacy not just in computer technology, but as a broad concern of the educational process.

Featuring a mix of perspectives, it explores the divergent ways in which media literacy is connected to educational communities and academic areas in both local and global contexts. The volume is structured around seven themes: • Media Literacy: Past and Present • Digital Media and Learning • Global Perspectives • Public Spaces • Civic Activism • Policy and Digital Citizenship • Future Connections Compelling, well-organized, and authoritative, this one-stop resource for understanding more about media literacy education across disciplines, cultures, and divides offers the fresh outlook that is needed at this point in time. Globally, as more and more states and countries call for media literacy education more explicitly in their curriculum guidelines, educators are being required to teach media literacy in both elementary and secondary education contexts.

Social media is a multi-faceted tool that has been used by educators and/or their students in ways both beneficial and detrimental. Despite the ubiquitous nature of this tool, there is much research still needed on the multitude of ways that social media impacts education. This book presents research on the influences of social media on education, broadly construed. Specifically, the research included in this book is categorized into four broad areas, examining the educational influence of social media on youth and college students, professional development in content areas, higher education learning, and social justice and activism. Chapter authors emphasize the opportunities of social media use in education and provide recommendations for how to address challenges that may arise with social media integration into the teaching and learning setting. These authors also advocate for use of social media to grow and enhance professional interaction among educators, moving beyond the social aspect of these platforms to advocate for educational and societal change. Individuals working in K-12 schools, teacher education, teacher professional development, and higher education, including pharmacy, nursing, dental and medical education, as well as those in other educational settings can use these findings to support and guide integration of social media into teaching and learning as well as their professional practice. Endorsements for Social Media: Influences on Education "Anyone attempting to understand these issues and the emerging, critical role of social media in education today should read the excellent edited book Social Media: Influences on Education. I’ve been monitoring educational media and technology research and practice for the past 40 years. In my view this book is an important contribution to a current perspective on social media and its impact from preschool to higher education and professional studies in general and social justice issues specifically." Richard E. Clark, Emeritus Professor University of Southern California "Social Media: Influences on Education is an essential book for those seeking to understand the relationship between education and social media or to conduct social media research in education. Griffin and Zinskie have collected a variety of essays showcasing approaches to researching social media from qualitative interviews with teachers, to meta-analyses of nascent literature, and research within the platforms themselves. Providing a well-rounded introduction to the field, this book provides a foundation for those interested in understanding and exploring the impact social media has had on elementary, secondary, and tertiary education." Naomi Barnes, Senior Lecturer Queensland University of Technology, Australia "Social Media: Influences on Education is a must-read for anyone interested in social media's impact on education and social justice. Grounded in the latest research, Griffin and Zinskie offer an informed, critical perspective on key issues – children’s social media use, cyber-harassment, misinformation, social justice through social media, professional networking, and more – as social media pervades every aspect of our lives. Educators, parents, students, activists and social media users everywhere, if you’re invested in education and social justice, this book is for you!" In TEACHING THE MEDIA: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES Andrew Hart initiates a challenging dialogue about approaches to Media teaching in the major English-speaking nations of the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa. By animating actual lessons and the considered views of classroom practitioners, TEACHING THE MEDIA encourages readers to develop new perspectives on Media teaching, to examine approaches that differ from their own, and to reflect critically on their own practices with a view to understanding them more fully and enhancing their effectiveness in the classroom. Based on original research that began in England in the early 1990s, this is the first international comparative study to focus on Media Education in English-speaking countries. It systematically examines classroom strategies for Media teaching in the light of the major theoretical paradigms which have emerged globally over the last 50 years. It analyses the rich diversity of different educational concerns, goals, and classroom practices through a series of national studies of teachers and lessons. As a result, not only do we see how Media is actually taught in range of classroom contexts, but existing models of Media teaching can now be more precisely critiqued and made more accessible for further research and development.

The conference "Media Education Futures" in Tampere, Finland 2014, highlighted participation, well-being and citizenship as current Nordic perspectives in media education, and discussed media and information literacies contributing to intercultural dialogue. The goal was to display and promote research in the field along with the practices of media education. Research results presented at the conference indicated that the civic skills needed in information societies include critical awareness, which is the basis for understanding media societies. Critical thinking is also the basis for creativity and should be included in the teaching of coding, which has been done in several countries in new school curricula at the basic level. Moreover, broader cooperation among researchers with different cultural backgrounds, rather than traditional Europe-centred collaboration was echoed. This publication reflects topics including critical awareness, technological citizenry, methodologies in studying young people in urban cities, and youth well-being in relations to media and information literacies. The publication covers articles from different parts of the world including, for example, China and India in Asia and Brazil in Latin America, as well as several European countries. It is divided into two sections - 1) Academic Articles and 2) Practical Papers and Case Studies - as reflections on the futures of media education.
