Sports is not just a field that deals with sports branches, athletes, or coaches. Sport; is a multidisciplinary field that interacts with many fields, especially health, education, and psycho-social fields. In this context, the book presents research and compilations that have been the subject of research in the field of sports by maintaining their current status, whose popularity has increased recently, and which have contributed to the literature for the first time. The aim is to guide sports scientists who have turned to the field and to be a guide for future studies, especially compilation studies. Within the aforementioned framework, it aims to highlight different aspects of sports with a different subject in each book chapter and to reveal detailed information about practical applications. We would like to thank all sports scientists and the publishing house board who contributed to the preparation of this book, and we hope that it will contribute to the field of sports sciences.

Human beings have always sought ways to gain a competitive edge over their opponents, but sports science is a relatively young discipline. So what is it all about, and how can it help athletes perform better? Sports science is the application of scientific principles to explain sporting phenomena and provide a basis for improving the performance of teams and individuals. In this comprehensive yet easy-to-use introduction, you will learn everything you need to know about it in one place, including the key research and current knowledge, providing you with a well-informed starting point in your study of this fascinating subject. The focus of the book is on the three disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology: - Biomechanics: using mechanical principles to understand human movement and how the human body interacts with equipment and apparatus - Physiology: using biological sciences to investigate how the body responds to exercise and training - Psychology: using psychological principles to provide answers to questions about human behaviour in sports settings This new edition has been updated to include case studies to show what you can do with a sports science degree and advice on how to prepare for careers where sports science knowledge is used. It includes chapters on the key systems in the body - skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and nervous - as well as covering sports nutrition and planning research in sport. Whether you are a student, interested in sport and sport performance as a professional practice, or involved in sport at any level, Sports Science: A complete introduction is your go-to guide.

"Ntoumanis and Myers have done sport and exercise science researchers and students a tremendous service in producing An Introduction to Intermediate and Advanced Statistical Analyses for Sport and Exercise Scientists. This book has an outstanding compilation of comprehensible chapters dealing with the important concepts and technical minutia of the statistical analyses that sport and exercise science scholars use (or should be using!) in their efforts to conduct meaningful research in the field. It is a resource that all sport and exercise scientists and their students should have on their book shelves." —Robert Eklund, School of Sport, University of Stirling, UK "Motivating, to have a statistics text devoted to enabling researchers studying sport and exercise science to apply the most sophisticated analytical techniques to their data. Authors hit the mark between using technical language as necessary and user-friendly terms or translations to keep users encouraged. Text covers traditional and well-used tools but also less common and more complex tools, but always with familiar examples to make their explanations come alive. As a dynamic systems theorist and developmentalist, I would love to see more researchers in my area create study designs that would enable the use of tools outlined here, such as multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) or mediation & moderation analyses, to uncover cascades of relations among subsystems contributing to motor performance, over time. This text can facilitate that outcome." —Beverly D. Ulrich, School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan, USA "The domain of quantitative methods is constantly evolving and expanding. This means that there is tremendous pressure on researchers to stay current, both in terms of best practices and improvements in more traditional methods as well as increasingly complex new methods. With this volume Ntoumanis and Myers present a nice cross-section of both, helping sport and exercise science researchers to address old questions in better ways, and, even more excitingly, to address new questions entirely. I have no doubt that this volume will quickly become a lovingly dog-eared companion for students and researchers, helping them to continue to move the field forward." —Gregory R. Hancock, University of Maryland and Center for Integrated Latent Variable Research (CILVR), USA

There are two main reasons for pursuing research in the Sports Sciences. Firstly, by studying responses to exercise, we learn about the normal function of the tissues and or gans whose function allows exercise to be performed. The genetic endowment of elite ath letes is a major factor in their success, and they represent one end of the continuum of human performance capability: the study of elite athletes also demonstrates the limits of human adaptation because nowhere else is the body subjected to such levels of intensive exercise on a regular basis. The second reason for studying Sports Science is the intrinsic interest and value of the subject itself. Elite performers set levels to which others can as pire, but even among spectators, sport is an important part oflife and society. of top sport and elite performers, there is also another reason Apart from the study for medical and scientific interest in sport. There is no longer any doubt that lack ofphysi cal activity is a major risk factor for many of the diseases that affect people in all coun tries: such diseases include coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. An increased level of recreational physical activity is now an accepted part of the prescription for treatment and prevention of many illnesses, including those with psychological as well as physical causes. An understanding of the normal response to exercise, as well as of the role of exercise in disease prevention, is therefore vital.

Applied Sport Science and Medicine has become an integral part of the high-performance environment in recent years despite the relative youth of the discipline. Early work in sport science and sports medicine attempted to adopt approaches employed in the more general and established disciplines of science and medicine. There is a growing recognition that a multidisciplinary support team should act in an interdisciplinary manner to optimise their impact on health and performance. Athletes require information to be given in a user-friendly way and will tend to see issues in a holistic way, raising questions such as "what does this mean to me?" and "is my training going to produce the results when I want it to?"Although the terms multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary have become part of normal parlance in the support environment, very few teams provide a truly interdisciplinary approach. This is not criticism of professionals or an excessively bold claim but recognition of the fact that sport and exercise science and medicine has placed emphasis in its research and practice on developing subject-specific experts, such as sport psychologists, physiologists, and so on. Furthermore, the rapid expansion of multi-disciplinary support teams over the past 2 decades, combined with an ever increasing specialisation of individual sport science and medicine disciplines has resulted in confusion for practitioners regarding how best to work closely with their fellow support team members to optimise practice. In recognition of the need for a bespoke, individual tailored approach, this book examines examples of support from a case study perspective across the broad range of sport science and medicine disciplines written by recognised world leaders. This book provides 29 case studies covering physiology, psychology, biomechanics, motor control and performance analysis, nutrition, strength and conditioning and sports medicine. Each case study is presented in a structured format providing a vignette of the case with key information including the challenges faced. The vignette is followed by a contemporary review of the key literature in the field informing the decision-making process involved in the case study and related differential diagnoses and interventions. The case study is concluded by presenting the intervention and outcome. Each case study is followed by a commentary from another world leader drawing out salient points, expanding the discussion and giving personal insight. We divided the book into three sections. 1. The Reactive Model: Providing solutions for pre-existing problems2. The Predictive Model: Providing solutions for events that are predicted to occur3. The Proactive Model: Providing on-going support and developing interdisciplinary teamsThe book has been written by world-leading practitioners. The four editors have an accumulated experience of over 100 years in applied sport science and medicine and have been discussing the idea of producing a book that highlights the importance of an individualized, case-by-case approach to optimizing health and performance of athletes. The plan was to gain insight into best practice and provide information on elite athlete support from those with first-hand experience, and so we contacted the world's leading practitioners and researchers in sport science and medicine to see if they would like to contribute a chapter or comment on a chapter. Practitioners, athletes, students and anyone interested in sport should find the content of these case studies relevant and useful; they are diverse and capture the range of issues consultants face. Overall, Case Studies in Sport Science and Medicine offers a unique and valuable collection of case studies in a wide range of sport science and medicine disciplines written by world leaders in the field of high-performance sport for those working in the field of sports science and medicine.

Community-based research has recently gained attention within the sport and exercise sciences. When seeking to understand community based research methodologies, one finds a diversity of approaches spanning a breadth of ontological views and equally diverse methodological approaches. Though little is known about community-based sport, exercise and physical activity research, these foci are beginning to gain scholarly attention, in part through the emerging sport for development and peace literature. This book features a conceptual introduction and eight pioneering examples of community-based research from North American, European, and Oceanic scholars. The topic matter reveals scholarship undertaken in relation to health, physical activity, youth sport, and elite sport, exemplifying work with mainstream and marginalized populations. This book, perhaps the first compilation of community-based research relating to sport, exercise and health, will be of interest to sociologists of sport, sport and exercise psychology scholars, sport management scholars, qualitative researchers, health scholars and practitioners, sport for development organizations, and research ready communities seeking to engage in localized research projects. This book was published as a special issue of Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health.
