This volume demonstrates the instrumental use of Currere as a methodology to bring about Deracialisation through transformational learning by a white educator in Post-Apartheid South Africa. Offering an honest and vulnerable recognition of privilege and exclusivity, it disrupts deep-seated racial bias and assumptions, unveils racial blind spots, and confronts the discourse that South African "white" educators are, overtly or covertly, perpetuating systemic racism within schools. Based on autoethnographic analyses of the author’s lived educational experiences within the Apartheid regime, it uses the theoretical concepts of Currere to initiate her journey towards Deracialisation and transform her current pedagogical practice. This book builds upon Louise Berman’s late 20th-century framing of life processes to inform school curriculum, by proposing a new curriculum project that extends and reframes Berman in and beyond schooling. Using the well-established curriculum theorizing method, currere, the author focuses on seven life processes, including knowing, loving, losing, growing, forgiving, relating, and hoping. Each of these is approached using currere-oriented, autobiographical fragments – stories from the author’s own lived experiences in education and life – that illuminate the educational, curricular, and pedagogical possibilities of each of the seven processes using past, present, and future perspectives, which the author calls curriculum fragments. These curriculum fragments are tied to historical and contemporary curriculum theorizing and educational theory and practice, in order to suggest considerations for movement for the reader, scholar, educator, and leader. It ultimately asks whether humanity can create a joyful, beautiful, and just curriculum of life for each and every person through schooling and beyond, and consequently, a better world built on love. This book explores the concept of exile, experienced not as a physical displacement but as a subjective experience of disconnection from the Other. It further clarifies the notion of exilic subjectivity, whereby a hidden facet of the self—ineffable both to the Other and to the Self—causes a distance between self-comprehension and external perception. In doing so, it poses a challenge to recognition theory’s assertion that self-understanding occurs through interactions with Others. Engaging with the writings of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Charles Taylor, Axel Honneth, Søren Kierkegaard, and Rumi, the book explores the difficulties individuals encounter when transitioning their inwardly focused private identities into public spaces, such as educational institutions.
