Curriculum and the Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure lays bare the untold damage done to children who are forced to endure the toxic combination of "fermented parenting" (as author Leslie Nissen has termed it) and frequent family moves at the hands of alcoholic parents who perpetually seek the elusive Geographic Cure. While such parents deceive themselves that in the next new place, sobriety will prevail, their children know better. Alcoholics who chronically uproot their families for a fresh start usually carry along every reason to drink. For the school-age children of such cure-seeking alcoholics, the torment of life with a volatile, unpredictable and chronically intoxicated parent is intensified by the anguish of being “the new kid” who changes schools at the whim of the parent. Highly mobile children, bearing an alarmingly long list of prior schools, may be part of a group which Nissen calls Geographic Cure Children, whose chances of finding help are nearly non-existent, despite their acute need for care. The dilemma of this unique subset of Children of Alcoholics is examined via autobiographical, psychoanalytic and fictional lenses. Nissen also recounts her own urge to hit the road when diagnosed with cancer, and explores the Geographic Cure writ large, observing how the current “testing frenzy” and clamor for cures for low test scores dominate educational policy. Could teachers’ panic about accountability cause them to resent new students who appear at their classroom doors mid-year? Is education encumbered because, at the hands of policy-makers, educators are working the Life Erratic?

Teacher-pupil planning means teachers and students working in a partnership to articulate a problem/concern, develop objectives, locate materials/resources, and evaluate progress. The intent of this volume of Middle Level Education and the Self-Enhancing School titled, “School is Life, Not a Preparation for Life”-John Dewey: Democratic Practices in Middle Grades Education, is to take the thoughts about the middle grades school curriculum presented in volume one (Middle Grades Curriculum: Voices and Visions of the Self-Enhancing School) and demonstrate the efforts taking place in teacher education programs and middle grades classrooms today. Volume two is organized into two parts, efforts within teacher education programs and efforts of practitioners in the middle grades classrooms. We asked authors in both contexts to address the following questions: 1. Antecedents: What knowledge, skills and dispositions must be in place in all stakeholders to have teacher-pupil planning serve a central role in the middle grades teacher education program or middle grades classroom? 2. Implementation: What does the teacher-pupil planning process look like within your teacher education program or middle grades classroom? 3. Outcomes: What benefits (knowledge, skills, and dispositions) are derived from the implementation of teacher-pupil planning in your teacher education program or your middle grades classroom?

When my parents began writing “life stories” in their writing group, I figured a few good stories would make it onto paper. Well, they did – followed by many, many more than I ever imagined. The family history that emerged makes for exciting and revelatory reading. From the family roots in Scotland and England, to the shores of Connecticut, then westward to Indiana, the family grew and flourished. The adventures and travels of the Lynch and Cook families span World Wars, cross thousands of miles, and yielded hundreds of photographs. This book will captivate you with its fascinating twists and turns, and with its tales of love and devotion. It is, indeed, a feast of a book.

Contributors from around the world tackle the factors that have the greatest impact on creating quality learning opportunities for students: namely policy, school leadership and teaching/teachers' lives. Drawing on a range of critical conceptual and empirical perspectives, the contributions illustrate the extent to which experience can be similar around the world. The book sheds much-needed light on the effects of mandated change upon school leaders and teachers, both nationally and internationally. It also demonstrates how teachers have coped or flourished, both because and in spite of the changing circumstances they work under.

We're all learners on life's journey, and often the messy problems we encounter present us with the best education. Researchers are finding that the same concept holds true for students in our classrooms. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an authentic, experiential form of learning centered around the collaborative investigation and resolution of real-world problems. In PBL, students address a problematic situation from the perspective of a stakeholder in the situation. As both a curriculum organizer and instructional strategy, PBL fosters active learning, supports knowledge construction, integrates disciplines, and naturally combines school learning with real life. In this second edition of their book, Torp and Sage offer opportunities to learn about PBL from a variety of perspectives. New to this edition is an in-depth look at assessing education in and through problem-based learning--how to use assessment not only to see what students have learned during the PBL experience, but also how to use assessment to enhance PBL itself. New examples--from elementary, secondary, and university levels--new charts, and expanded graphics enhance every chapter of this new edition. Note: This product listing is for the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of the book.
