Este volumen presenta textos inéditos de Ferdinand de Saussure que habían permanecido ocultos hasta 1996 en un pabellón de la mansión de su familia. La sensación fue un manuscrito de 70 páginas con el título “De la doble esencia del lenguaje”. Se trata de un texto del que no se conocía más que la intención de escribirlo. De las cartas y anotaciones de Saussure se desprende que desde 1891 tenía el propósito de escribir un libro para demostrar que toda la lingüística de su tiempo estaba equivocada y que su terminología no tenía sentido alguno. Lo que le impidió terminar este proyecto fue su convicción de que la lingüística “no tenía objeto”, ya que las palabras, los sonidos y los significados no tenían consistencia alguna fuera del contexto de su uso. Además del manuscrito inédito mencionado, este volumen incluye una serie de textos redactados por Saussure para su obra sobre “Lingüística general” que permiten conocer finalmente la teoría de Saussure explicada en sus propias palabras, ya que en su mayoría sólo se transmitió a través del Curso de lingüística general, publicado a comienzos del siglo XX a partir de apuntes de alumnos.
