Excerpt from Cutaneous Medicine, Vol. 1: A Systematic Treatise on the Diseases of the Skin The present work has been written to take the place of the author's former Practical Treatise on Diseases Of the Skin, which for several years has been out Of print. The favorable reception accorded to that work by the medical profession everywhere as attested by the many thousand copies published, by the press in this country and abroad, and by its translation into French, Italian, and Russian, has led the author to believe that a larger and more comprehensive treatise on the same subject might be equally well received. The material dealt with in the present volume has on all sides been approached from a practical stand-point. It has been the aim Of the author to adhere closely to the practical aspect of the subject, supported by science and by experience. The work, as a whole, rests on clinical Observation supported by pathology and pathological anatomy. The principles of cutaneous pathology and therapeutics have been put forth upon conservative lines in the light of modern research and experience. The rapid strides that Dermatology has taken during the past decade have produced remarkable changes in the pathology of many of the diseases of the Skin, but clinical Observations are on this account none the less valuable and important. Excerpt from Cutaneous Medicine, Vol. 2: A Systematic Treatise on the Diseases of the Skin; Classification, Anaemias, Hyperaemias, Inflammations It is believed that a modification and elaboration of the author's old classification, already referred to, may be made with advantage. By the plan presented the many and varied diseases which occur in the integument are arranged so as to be of use in practice. It differs from the author's earlier plan in the omission of an etiological class and in other ways. In the present state of our knowledge, it will serve the purposes of dermatology best if questions of etiology, important though they are, be excluded from the framework of a classification, place being elsewhere afforded for their recognition. In doing this their great im portance is not undervalued. The student must become acquainted with the cutaneous manifestations of disease, with the lesions and other symptoms, before he can understand their etiology and their intimate pathology. This applies particularly to the inflammatory diseases. Prominence is therefore given in the classification to clinical features and to normal anatomy as well as to pathological anatomy. The dis eases are arranged in such a manner that their chief clinical characters are in many instances grouped and brought forward prominently. The clinician and the pathologist must labor together, one supporting the other. The diseases involving the appendages of the skin Specially or solely are considered in the several classes and divisions where they appropriately belong. The appendages are a part of the integument, and in a pathological classification cannot well be separated from it. The plan presented deals Specially with the skin. It is founded upon pathology and pathological anatomy. Well defined diseases only are introduced; hence it is unencumbered. It is believed to be fairly con sistent, and is simple. The microscope plays a very important part in the elucidation of cutaneous diseases, and the classification receives sup port in most instances from this valuable aid. It is through this instru ment principally that the subject matter has been elaborated in the past; it is to it that we have a right to look for further revelations in the future. Excerpt from A Practical and Theoretical: Treatise on the Diseases of the Skin The regional system of classification, grounded on a distribution of skin diseases according to their locality, was not likely to find favour when these became better understood. Although commenced by no less an authority than Alibert, he was soon obliged to abandon it. Admitting the advantage of the situa tion of a cutaneous eruption, as assisting us often to arrive at a true diagnosis, its value is not so great that we can always rely upon it; much less can we found a system, which should take it exclusively for a base. For the third, or natural system, which claims for its foundation the anatomy of the skin, we are indebted to Mr. Erasmus Wilson. The several divisions and sub divisions which he has instituted are no doubt in the main correct. At the same time it may be a question, whether this plan is not liable to degenerate into an excess of detail, and lead to distinctions, which, while they scarcely allow of an accurate appreciation, are yet hardly avoided. Another point open to inquiry, and which meets us at the threshold of all classification of skin diseases, is the obscurity which envelopes their pathology; and until this point is satisfactorily cleared, no system of classification can be pronounced complete. Excerpt from On Diseases of the Skin: A System of Cutaneous Medicine The skin, in its physiological and pathological relations to the general system, no less than in its individual structural derangements and morbid phenomena, must be regarded as an organ capable of exerting a considerable influence over the well-being of the animal economy and worthy of our closest and most earnest investigation and study. Its physiological relations are manifested in its sensibility and secreting capacity, its pathological relations in its sympathies and nutritive attributes; while its morbid phenomena are replete with signification and interest.
