I pEW Scottish abbeys are more famous than Melrose; and the romance of history which is interwoven with its name has formed the theme of more than one chronicler and poet. But we have not now to do with that monastery which at a later date was reared with all the architectural splendour characteristic of Norman churches. The buildings of the Celtic monks boasted neither carved roofs nor pointed arches; they were constructed of timber, and thatched with wattle or moss. On the banks of the Tweed, distant about a mile and a half from the foundation of David I., was built the abbey of Old Melrose. The name, Mael-ros or Mul-ross, signifying the "bare promontory," described its position. At the point where it stood the river makes an abrupt semi-circular sweep, in the form of a horseshoe, round a narrow spot of land which, projecting from the thick forest which covered the country, presented an open surface of green sward. On the peninsula thus formed the monastery stood, while a stone wall built across the narrowest part gave protection from sudden attack. In the centre of the enclosure, on a gentle eminence, the monks reared their wooden chapel, which communicated by an archway with the adjoining sacristy. The ground-plan of the monastery was quadrangular; and besides the oratory, various other detached buildings were scattered over its surface, among them the abbot's house, the kitchen, the refectory, and the cells set apart for the entertainment of strangers.
