In this consideration of media practice in the Arab region, Mohammad Ayish and Noha Mellor explore the changing status and function of journalists and journalism given the new realities of reporting in the digital age. The authors draw on focus group discussions, interviews, and social media traffic surveys to examine how social and new media have been integrated into Arab and pan-Arab newsroom operations and harnessed to enhance engagement with an empowered audience. Efforts to engage with audiences in social space, Ayish and Mellor argue, are part of a broad and long-waged information war aimed at winning hearts and minds in the MENA region. Social platforms present excellent opportunities to engage with audiences, but the extent to which such opportunities can be realized are hamstrung by limits on free expression and online access—and vary significantly from country to country and from media channel to media channel. Overall, Reporting in the MENA Region paints a comprehensive and contemporary picture of how today’s Arab journalists perceive and use digital media.

This book explores the dynamic landscape in contemporary newsrooms across three continents by investigating the impact that the processes of searching, processing, and distributing data and information and the use of big data, with secure, automatic, and agile retrieval of information all have in this context. Journalistic organizations have undergone digital transformations, and only those implementing accurate transformations survive. In so doing, the book addresses the fields of e-Communication, Computer Science, and Information Science and other areas of the authors’ expertise. The first five chapters focus on technical visits to investigate newsrooms’ productive routines and flows in major dailies from Brazil, Costa Rica, and England. The remaining chapters consider that the news production routines are cooperative and distributed and at the same time need to be managed from different perspectives to support the convergence of digital media. Last but not least, the book also identifies an increase in ICT-based tools, with an increasing connection from new media combined with the growing trend of digital economy practices as important factors in the new landscape of digital journalism.

Part I introduces the overarching concept of ethical principles, featuring readings that define ethics, explain why we need ethics policies and guidelines, and present scenarios where contemporary ethics come into play. In Part II, students read a selection of case studies that explore modern issues in ethics, including crowdfunding, access to the internet, and social media, blogging, and advertising. Part III presents select articles on social media, media ethics, and reputation and brand management. The final part addresses global challenges related to media ethics, including Wikileaks and issues in whistle blowing, phone hack scandals, China's internet search market, and media ethics in Africa. Cyberbullying is one of the darker and more troubling aspects to the growing accessibility of new media technologies. Children in developed countries engage with cyberspace at younger and younger ages, and the use of the internet as a means to bully and harass has been greeted with alarm by educationalists, parents, the media, and governments. This important new book is the result of a four-year international collaboration, funded by the EU, to better understand how we can cope and confront cyberbullying, and how new media technologies can be used to actually support the victims of such abuse. The articles initially define the historical and theoretical context to cyberbullying, before examining key issues involved in managing this pervasive phenomenon. Coverage includes: The definition and measurement of cyberbullying. The legal challenges in tackling cyberbullying across a number of international contexts. The role of mobile phone companies and Internet service providers in monitoring and prevention How the media frame and present the issue, and how that influences our understanding. How victims can cope with the effects of cyberbullying, and the guidelines and advice provided in different countries. How cyber-bullying can continue from school into further education, and the strategies that can be used to prevent it. The ways in which accessing 'youth voice', or maximising the contribution of young people themselves to the research process, can enhance our understanding The book concludes with practical guidance to help confront the trauma that cyberbullying can cause. It will be a valuable resource for researchers, students, policy makers and administrators with an interest in how children and young people are rendered vulnerable to bullying and harassment through a variety of online channels.
