Fundamentals of Secure by Design Embedding security into the design process means considering potential vulnerabilities from the moment a new application or system is conceived. Instead of treating security as an afterthought or a separate layer added later, it becomes an integral part of every step in development. This proactive approach helps identify and mitigate risks early, reducing the chances of costly fixes or breaches later on. For security professionals, this mindset shifts the focus from reactive measures to prevention, emphasizing the importance of building resilient systems from the ground up.

Can a system be considered truly reliable if it isn't fundamentally secure? Or can it be considered secure if it's unreliable? Security is crucial to the design and operation of scalable systems in production, as it plays an important part in product quality, performance, and availability. In this book, experts from Google share best practices to help your organization design scalable and reliable systems that are fundamentally secure. Two previous O’Reilly books from Google—Site Reliability Engineering and The Site Reliability Workbook—demonstrated how and why a commitment to the entire service lifecycle enables organizations to successfully build, deploy, monitor, and maintain software systems. In this latest guide, the authors offer insights into system design, implementation, and maintenance from practitioners who specialize in security and reliability. They also discuss how building and adopting their recommended best practices requires a culture that’s supportive of such change. You’ll learn about secure and reliable systems through: Design strategies Recommendations for coding, testing, and debugging practices Strategies to prepare for, respond to, and recover from incidents Cultural best practices that help teams across your organization collaborate effectively

Have you ever wondered why so many companies and their security leaders fail in today's cyber challenges? Regardless if you are new in this role and look for guidance, or you are considering yourself an expert and just wish to verify that you haven't forgotten anything - this book will help you to tackle the subject right - by building "security by design." The content covers your initial phases in the job such as setting expectations, base lining, gap analysis, capabilities building, and org chart variances. It then leads you to define security architecture, addressing a secure development process, application security and also security policy levels. Further items such as awareness programs, asset management, teaming up with audit, risk management, and finally the strategy development are covered. Then we dive into ROIs, trust relationships, KPIs, incident response, forensics, before we run into crises management by looking at some specific examples of personal experience of the author - himself a C(I)SO for many years. The book is ending by providing advice how to deal with other executive management, and what kind of education, certifications, and networking you need to focus on. If you consistently apply the content and advice provided in this book, you should be all set to succeed in your role as C(I)SO.

Cybersecurity Risk Management written by Kurt J. Engemann and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-19 with Computers categories.

Cybersecurity refers to the set of technologies, practices, and strategies designed to protect computer systems, networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access, theft, damage, disruption, or misuse. It involves identifying and assessing potential threats and vulnerabilities, and implementing controls and countermeasures to prevent or mitigate them. Some major risks of a successful cyberattack include: data breaches, ransomware attacks, disruption of services, damage to infrastructure, espionage and sabotage. Cybersecurity Risk Management: Enhancing Leadership and Expertise explores this highly dynamic field that is situated in a fascinating juxtaposition with an extremely advanced and capable set of cyber threat adversaries, rapidly evolving technologies, global digitalization, complex international rules and regulations, geo-politics, and even warfare. A successful cyber-attack can have significant consequences for individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. With comprehensive chapters in the first part of the book covering fundamental concepts and approaches, and those in the second illustrating applications of these fundamental principles, Cybersecurity Risk Management: Enhancing Leadership and Expertise makes an important contribution to the literature in the field by proposing an appropriate basis for managing cybersecurity risk to overcome practical challenges.

Security And Usability written by Lorrie Faith Cranor and has been published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc." this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-25 with Computers categories.

Human factors and usability issues have traditionally played a limited role in security research and secure systems development. Security experts have largely ignored usability issues--both because they often failed to recognize the importance of human factors and because they lacked the expertise to address them. But there is a growing recognition that today's security problems can be solved only by addressing issues of usability and human factors. Increasingly, well-publicized security breaches are attributed to human errors that might have been prevented through more usable software. Indeed, the world's future cyber-security depends upon the deployment of security technology that can be broadly used by untrained computer users. Still, many people believe there is an inherent tradeoff between computer security and usability. It's true that a computer without passwords is usable, but not very secure. A computer that makes you authenticate every five minutes with a password and a fresh drop of blood might be very secure, but nobody would use it. Clearly, people need computers, and if they can't use one that's secure, they'll use one that isn't. Unfortunately, unsecured systems aren't usable for long, either. They get hacked, compromised, and otherwise rendered useless. There is increasing agreement that we need to design secure systems that people can actually use, but less agreement about how to reach this goal. Security & Usability is the first book-length work describing the current state of the art in this emerging field. Edited by security experts Dr. Lorrie Faith Cranor and Dr. Simson Garfinkel, and authored by cutting-edge security and human-computerinteraction (HCI) researchers world-wide, this volume is expected to become both a classic reference and an inspiration for future research. Security & Usability groups 34 essays into six parts: Realigning Usability and Security---with careful attention to user-centered design principles, security and usability can be synergistic. Authentication Mechanisms-- techniques for identifying and authenticating computer users. Secure Systems--how system software can deliver or destroy a secure user experience. Privacy and Anonymity Systems--methods for allowing people to control the release of personal information. Commercializing Usability: The Vendor Perspective--specific experiences of security and software vendors (e.g.,IBM, Microsoft, Lotus, Firefox, and Zone Labs) in addressing usability. The Classics--groundbreaking papers that sparked the field of security and usability. This book is expected to start an avalanche of discussion, new ideas, and further advances in this important field.

Our increased reliance on computer technology for all aspects of life, from education to business, means that the field of cyber-security has become of paramount importance to us all. This book presents the proceedings of the inaugural Singapore Cyber-Security R&D Conference (SG-CRC 2016), held in Singapore in January 2016, and contains six full and seven short peer-reviewed papers. The conference took as its theme the importance of introducing a technically grounded plan for integrating cyber-security into a system early in the design process, rather than as an afterthought. The element of design is integral to a process, be it a purely software system, such as one engaged in managing online transactions, or a combination of hardware and software such as those used in Industrial Control Systems, pacemakers, and a multitude of IoT devices. SG-CRC 2016 focused on how design as an element can be made explicit early in the development process using novel techniques based on sound mathematical tools and engineering approaches, and brought together academics and practitioners from across the world to participate in a program of research papers and industrial best practice, as well as an exhibition of tools. The book will be of interest to all those with a working interest in improved cyber-security.
