This book investigates how digitalization has affected entrepreneurship, labour markets, financial markets, and women's empowerment, underlining the opportunity it presents for a more inclusive and equal society. It explores how technology changes and creates gender, and the transformational potential it has for questioning conventional concepts of gender, drawing on the theories and critiques of cyberfeminism. The contributors discuss how women's agency and power in establishing emancipated cyberspaces are critically impacted by cyberfeminist conceptions of technical growth. This volume focuses on the connection between ecological thought and the technological arts in Mexico in order to challenge assumptions that ecological thought is a domain exclusive to the arts of the Global North and reconceive it as an inventive nexus of materialist speculations into a global posthuman world. Tracking the concept of ecology through a series of case studies taken from the histories of new media arts in Mexico over the last 50 years (from the mid-twentieth century to the present), this book differs from ecological art histories that either ignore technological art or associate it exclusively with the Global North. It includes artists and collectives working both in Mexico and transnationally and examines collaborative projects responding to anthropogenic environmental degradation in Mexico and elsewhere. Cyberfeminism in Northern Lights: Digital Media and Gender in a Nordic Context pushes the boundaries of contemporary cyberfeminism significantly. An argument for a shift in understanding new media—from a fascination with devices to an examination of the complex processes of mediation. In Life after New Media, Sarah Kember and Joanna Zylinska make a case for a significant shift in our understanding of new media. They argue that we should move beyond our fascination with objects—computers, smart phones, iPods, Kindles—to an examination of the interlocking technical, social, and biological processes of mediation. Doing so, they say, reveals that life itself can be understood as mediated—subject to the same processes of reproduction, transformation, flattening, and patenting undergone by other media forms. By Kember and Zylinska's account, the dispersal of media and technology into our biological and social lives intensifies our entanglement with nonhuman entities. Mediation—all-encompassing and indivisible—becomes for them a key trope for understanding our being in the technological world. Drawing on the work of Bergson and Derrida while displaying a rigorous playfulness toward philosophy, Kember and Zylinska examine the multiple flows of mediation. Importantly, they also consider the ethical necessity of making a “cut” to any media processes in order to contain them.
