This book uses a review of recovery efforts following the Nargis cyclone in Myanmar in 2008 to build a case for taking a risk-based approach to managing our natural resource base. It is argued that while natural resource disasters like soil loss and climate change are slow onset disasters they are often much more significant than events like Nargis, and are significant risk factors themselves in the scale of sudden onset disasters like Cyclone Nargis. The book concludes that building resilience for slow or rapid onset disasters requires the same 'holistic' approach to involve the concerned community if it is to be successful. It is suggested that an approach to monitoring that looks for the key risk points for these communities, whether they be bio physical, economic or social will be a more useful approach to planning action for them than the systems in common use, based as they are on monitoring for bureaucratic paymasters.

An incisive, unprecedented report on life inside Burma from the author of Finding George Orwell in Burma On May 2, 2008, an enormous tropical cyclone made landfall in Burma, wreaking untold havoc and killing more than 138,000 people. In No Bad News for the King, Emma Larkin, a Westerner who has been traveling to and secretly reporting on Burma for years, uses her extraordinary access and intimate understanding of the Burmese people to deliver a beautifully written and stunningly reported story that has never been told before. Chronicling the tragedy that unfolded in the chaotic days and months that followed the storm, she also examines the secretive politics of Burma's military dictatorship, a regime that relies on vicious military force and a bizarre combination of religion and mysticism to rule the country.

November 2010 sees the first elections in Myanmar/Burma since 1990, to be held as the culmination of the military regime's 'Road Map for Democracy' The conditions under which the elections are being held are far from favourable, although the laws and procedures under which they will be conducted have been in place for seven months and quite widely publicized. Political controls remain repressive, freedom of expression and assembly does not exist, and international access is restricted by government controls as well as sanctions. While the elections represent a turning point for Myanmar/Burma, the lead-up period has not been marked by many notable improvements in the way the country is governed or in the reforming impact of international assistance programmes. Presenters at the Australian National University 2009 Myanmar/Burma Update conference examined these questions and more. Leading experts from the United States, Japan, France, and Australia as well as from Myanmar/Burma have conributed to this collection of papers from the Conference.

On 2-3 May 2008 Cyclone Nargis slammed into Myanmar, causing almost 140,000 deaths and leaving 2 million in the Ayeyawaddy delta homeless. As Myanmar's initial delay in responding to the humanitarian crisis was evident, ASEAN emerged as mediator and convenor, coordinating international and regional efforts. This led to a tripartite cooperation mechanism among the Government of Myanmar, the United Nations and ASEAN. Through June-December 2008, Pavin Chachavalpongpun and Moe Thuzar documented ASEAN's role in helping Myanmar respond to Nargis.
