This edited volume of interdisciplinary essays considers the aspects of nation, identity, and collective experience in the notoriously divided island of Cyprus. The contributors examine the role of international politics particularly the involvement of Greece and Turkey and examine the changing relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1955. The book challenges prevailing assumptions about political and cultural identity in Cyprus and theorizes on the prospects for mobilizing more multi-dimensional and workable formations of community on Cyprus. The result is a tightly conceived volume, divided into sections of national identity, political possibilities, the location of culture, and social and psychological perspectives.

The year 2009 may well be a make-or-break year for the protracted Cyprus conflict. While strategic assessments and elite incentives bode cautiously well for a settlement, ultimately an agreement will have to be approved by the two Cypriot communities and above all it will have to be implemented by them on the ground. In view of the centrality of the people in this peace process, CEPS, in collaboration with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot partners, launched a project in late 2007 investigating, through successive opinion polls, what Cypriots think of each other, of the peace process and of possible solutions to the conflict. In this book the authors present the results of their second survey, conducted simultaneously in the southern and northern parts of the island in January and February 2009. It delves into the Cypriots' views on the thorniest questions of the conflict and assesses whether and how, once we leave the abstract level of labels and slogans and enter into the specifics of a package deal, convergence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots is possible.

Formerly a British colony, the island of Cyprus is now a divided country, where histories of political and cultural conflicts, as well as competing identities, are still contested. Cyprus provides the ideal case study for this innovative exploration, extensively illustrated, of how the practice of photography in relation to its political, cultural and economic contexts both contributes and responds to the formation of identity. Contributors from Cyprus, Greece, the UK and the USA, representing diverse disciplines, draw from photography theory, art history, anthropology and sociology to explore how the island and its people have been represented photographically. They reveal how the different gazes- colonial, political, gendered, and within art photography- contribute to the creation of individual and national identities and, by extension, to the creation and re-creation of imagery of Cyprus as place. While Photography and Cyprus focuses on one geographical and cultural territory, the questions this book asks and the themes and arguments it follows apply also to other places characterized by their colonial heritage. The intriguing example of Cyprus thus serves as a fitting test-ground for current debates relating to photography, place and identity.

In todays world, the issue of Cyprus is notable for all the wrong reasons: because of the duration of the divisions in Cyprus itself between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots (formalized since 1983 by a disputed international border across the island); because of the involvement of Greece and Turkey, for which the hyphenated Cypriot communities form proxy battalions; and because of the failure of the United Nations longstanding efforts to resolve the conflict. Much of the discussion in the book revolves around the difficulty of producing viable constitutional and civic arrangements in an ethnically-divided polity. It is clear that this issue dominates almost all discussions of the Cyprus Problem, from the drawing of internal borders, the conceptualization of identity of oneself and of the other, to the management of the natural resources with which the island is endowed. Containing chapters from both Turkish- and Greek-Cypriots, as well as outside scholars, the book covers four key themes, namely identity and perceptions; contemporary issues in the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities; comparisons with divided polities elsewhere; and new approaches to resolving the Cyprus Problem. One of the key messages from this book is that people-to-people initiatives must supplement the plans (and posturing) of politicians in order to make progress towards an ultimate resolution of the Cyprus Problem. The book shows that human ingenuity is able to find a widely accepted and workable formula for a Cyprus that combines unity and diversity, acknowledges the worth of its different constituent communities, and addresses or begins to move beyond historical animosities and injustices.

"[U]shers the reader into the complexities of the categorical ambiguity of Cyprus [and]... concentrates... on the Dead Zone of the divided society, in the cultural space where those who refuse to go to the poles gather." -- Anastasia Karakasidou, Wellesley College The volatile recent past of Cyprus has turned this island from the idyllic "island of Aphrodite" of tourist literature into a place renowned for hostile confrontations. Cyprus challenges familiar binary divisions, between Christianity and Islam, Greeks and Turks, Europe and the East, tradition and modernity. Anti-colonial struggles, the divisive effects of ethnic nationalism, war, invasion, territorial division, and population displacements are all facets of the notorious Cyprus Problem. Incorporating the most up-to-date social and cultural research on Cyprus, these essays examine nationalism and interethnic relations, Cyprus and the European Union, the impact of immigration, and the effects of tourism and international environmental movements, among other topics.

LACONIC TALES. CYPRUS 1974. A book about Cyprus and its people This historic book by Elias Pantelides is all about the laconic tales, the short biographies of 16 Cypriots. A Maronite, a British, 4 Turkish Cypriots, 10 Greek Cypriots speak out. All Cypriots. Their years of birth range from 1939 to 1959, but their 1974 memories are durable and long-lasting as if yesterday was today. In 1974 Cyprus suffered a lot. It was a barbaric catastrophic dark period. It becomes a bit clearer, rather more understandable when one takes the painful trip down memory lane, back to 1964, 1960 and 1955. The book provides solid and objective first-hand experiences based on real and factually correct historical events as witnessed by 16 Cypriots and concludes with chapter 17 which provides additional information, based on books and unpublished documents relevant to 1974 events in Cyprus. Some of these books, not all, are considered by the author as quite reliable. Every tale is presented with emphasis on the scorching summer of 1974 when Cyprus faced a terrible double tragedy and many people witnessed a small part of it. All 16 Cypriots, who speak out in this book, expressed their deep love for the land of Cyprus; irrespective of their ethnicity, mother language, gender, religion or atheism, or political convictions. All have been hoping for a free, united, peaceful, safe and equitable Cyprus.
