Budowa cywilizacji ekologicznej stała się współcześnie podstawą ideologiczną wyznaczającą ramy krajowej polityki środowiskowej w Chinach. Lansowana od początku nowego milenium nie miała spójnego charakteru i była ukierunkowana wyłącznie na chińskie społeczeństwo. W momencie dojścia do władzy Xi Jinpinga w 2012 r. sytuacja diametralnie się zmieniła. Najwyższe kierownictwo partyjne przyjęło ów koncept, osadzając go w nacjonalistycznej interpretacji historii. Władze w Pekinie odwołując się cywilizacji ekologicznej, starają się instrumentalnie kształtować przeświadczenie o istniejącej ciągłości kulturowej i narodowej. Przyjmowane rozwiązania mają zarówno odpowiadać na postępującą degradację środowiska w kraju, jak i stanowić skierowaną na zewnątrz propozycję budowania wspólnej globalnej przyszłości. Warto zauważyć, że w prezentowanej wizji cywilizacji ekologicznej nie ma mowy o zahamowaniu wzrostu gospodarczego, redystrybucji bogactwa czy zmniejszeniu produkcji celem zapobieżenia dalszej degradacji środowiska. Jest ona wyraźnie sprzężona z globalnym porządkiem kapitalistycznym i nie stanowi radykalnego zwrotu oznaczającego akceptację dla spowolnionego tempa rozwoju na poziomie globalnym i w samych Chinach. Cywilizacja ekologiczna nawiązuje do starożytnych rodzimych tradycji filozoficznych, które akcentowały istniejącą harmonię pomiędzy człowiekiem a naturą. Ożywiając tę starą ideę, władze w Chinach mówią dziś o potrzebie budowania wspólnej zielonej przyszłości.
