After surviving a hurricane in the Caribbean, ivory poachers in East Africa, and a Cairo crime syndicate racing up the Nile, zoologist Jack MacGregor, his paleontologist wife, Mavis, and children, Chris, Ryan, and Heather, head to the wilderness of Alaska and encounter an unusual new threat from ecoterrorists. As in all MacGregor Family Adventure Series novels, the MacGregors are once again caught in a web of intriguing characters full of danger, deception, and plenty of techno-thrilling surprises. Three Russian Orthodox priests seek the religious artifact the Cross of Charlemagne, while their rivals, a rogue Vatican priest and a renowned Polish archaeologist, are following a trail across Alaska left by early Russian settlers, hoping to reach the treasure first. Meanwhile, an ominous international team of ecoterrorists armed with state-of-the-art weapons are determined to prevent oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and get rid of Jack MacGregor once and for all. Featuring an entertaining cast of characters including the MacGregor teens' new friend, Roy Nageak, an Inupiat native, Czar of Alaska is fast paced and action packed. Vivid descriptions of the exhilarating Alaskan mountains create the setting for a harrowing encounter with a grizzly bear, daring dogsled and helicopter excursions, and plenty of sibling rivalry and family challenges. With the aid of a local historian, the Russian Orthodox priests, a member of the native Alutiq tribe, and a seasoned FBI agent, the MacGregors strive to recover lost treasures and unwittingly find themselves trapped in a situation that has them fighting for their lives. As with all of Richard Trout's books in the MacGregor Family Adventure Series, the book begins with a description of a historic event, putting readers in the throes of an a.d. 788 battle in the Bavarian Alps that sets the drama of the Cross of Charlemagne in motion.

In Russian Colonization of Alaska, Andrei Val'terovich Grinëv examines the sociohistorical origins of the former Russian colonies in Alaska, or "Russian America," between 1741 and 1799. Beginning with the Second Kamchatka Expedition of Vitus Ivanovich Bering and Aleksei Ilyich Chirikov's discovery of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and ending with the formation of the Russian-American Company's monopoly of the Russian colonial endeavor in the Americas, Russian Colonization of Alaska offers a definitive, revisionist examination of Tsarist Russia's foray into the imperial contest in North America. Russian Colonization of Alaska is the first comprehensive study to analyze the origin and evolution of Russian colonization based on research into political economy, history, and ethnography. Grinёv's study elaborates the social, political, spiritual, ideological, personal, and psychological aspects of Russian America. He also accounts for the idiosyncrasies of the natural environment, competition from other North American empires, Alaska Natives, and individual colonial diplomats. The colonization of Alaska, rather than being simply a continuation of the colonization of Siberia by Russians, was instead part of overarching Russian and global history.

A compact, fast-moving social and political history that brings to vivid life the story of Alaska's early days. Its name was not Alaska until we bought it in 1867. Until then it was Russian America. Americans at large are apt to forget that our 49th state, Alaska, was first explored and settled by the Russians. They left a definite mark on the vast Northwest. -- Amazon.

The Diplomacy Of Involvement written by David M. Pletcher and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Business & Economics categories.

Annotation Like its predecessor, this important new work is focused on the connection between trade and investment on the one hand and U.S. foreign policy on the other. David Pletcher describes the trade of the United States with the Far East, the islands of the Pacific, and the northwest coast of North America from 1784 (the year of the first American trading expedition to China) to 1844 (the year of the first trade treaty with China, followed immediately by the U.S. acquisition of Oregon and California). He then traces the growth of trade and investment in Alaska, Hawaii, and the South Pacific from 1844 to 1890 and proceeds to do the same for China, Japan, and Korea. In the ensuing chapters, Pletcher covers the 1890s, including the annexation of Hawaii, the Sino-Japanese War, the acquisition of the Philippines, and the Open Door policy in China. He concludes that the American expansion across the Pacific and into the Far East was not a deliberate, consistent drive for economic hegemony but a halting, experimental, improvised movement, carried out against determined opposition and indifference and dotted with setbacks and failures. Providing his own judgments about the wisdom and effectiveness of America's new endeavors, Pletcher summarizes the problems and handicaps involved, demonstrating that errors of the twentieth century were at least partly the result of poor preparation in the 1880s and 1890s. Touching on every place where Americans undertook significant economic activity, The Diplomacy of Involvementwill be an important aid for seasoned scholars, as well as an excellent introduction for the novice
