This book reconstructs the history of conception, pregnancy and childbirth in Europe from antiquity to the 20th century, focusing on its most significant turning points: the emergence of a medical-scientific approach to delivery in Ancient Greece, the impact of Christianity, the establishment of the man-midwife in the 18th century, the medicalisation of childbirth, the emergence of a new representation of the foetus as "unborn citizen", and, finally, the revolution of reproductive technologies. The book explores a history that, far from being linear, progressive or homogeneous, is characterised by significant continuities as well as transformations. The ways in which a woman gives birth and lives her pregnancy and the postpartum period are the result of a complex series of factors. The book therefore places these events in their wider cultural, social and religious contexts, which influenced the forms taken by rituals and therapeutic practices, religious and civil prescriptions and the regulation of the female body. The investigation of this complex experience represents a crucial contribution to cultural, social and gender history, as well as an indispensable tool for understanding today’s reality. It will be of great use to undergraduates studying the history of childbirth, the history of medicine, the history of the body, as well as women's and gender history more broadly.

Muove all'azione Silla, l'idealista in cerca di impossibili ritorni al passato; accende Cicerone nella sua teoresi; lo reclama per sé Cesare senza poter conservare né il potere né la vita; lo struttura mirabilmente Augusto, nel nuovo patto con gli dei (la pax Augusta) da cui nascerà la monarchia. L'intero corso della storia imperiale assiste poi a un costante dibattito, che impegna tanto gli stoici quanto la propaganda di corte, gli imperatori-soldati come il pensiero cristiano. Da quest'ultimo ambito uscirà, infine, la struttura tetragona e proiettata nei secoli a venire dell'impero cristiano.

This book provides a new approach to the study of the History of Roman Law. It collects the first results of the European Research Council Project, Scriptores iuris Romani - dedicated to a new collection of the texts of Roman jurisprudence, highlighting important methodological issues, together with innovative reconstructions of the profiles of some ancient jurists and works. Jurists were great protagonists of the history of Rome, both as producers and interpreters of law, since the Republican Age and as collaborators of the principes during the Empire. Nevertheless, their role has been underestimated by modern historians and legal experts for reasons connected to the developments of Modern Law in England and in Continental Europe. This book aims to address this imbalance. It presents an advanced paradigm in considering the most important aspects of Roman law: the Justinian Digesta, and other juridical late antique anthologies. The work offers an historiographic model which overturns current perspectives and makes way for a different path for legal and historical studies. Unlike existing literature, the focus is not on the Justinian Codification, but on the individualities of ancient Roman Jurists. As such, it presents the actual legal thought of its experts and authors: the ancient iuris prudentes. The book will be of interest to researchers and academics in Classics, Ancient History, History of Law, and contemporary legal studies.

Molte delle parole con cui le lingue classiche designano la nozione di confine, anzi, contengono in sé l’idea della comunicazione, la possibilità dello scambio, l’ipotesi del passaggio, rammentandoci che l’esclusione è solo una delle due facce, quella meno nobile, della frontiera.
