Chris loved and admired his father but it was only after his death he realised that he hardly knew him at all. Basil Avery Tarrant grew up in 1920s Reading. He worked as an administrator in a local factory and spent his Saturday nights down at the music halls. This story depicts a woman and two children whose husband and father is fighting in combat. The son, who is a fifth grader in elementary school, finds it very hard to accept the fact that his dad is away from home and fighting in a war. He is very upset. The absence of his father has affected his schooling and his relationship with his mother, his little sister, and his peers. His teacher observes the sudden change in both his behavior and his academics and summons his mother to a conference. The teacher and the administration were shocked to find out that the boy's father was fighting in combat. A survey of the student body at the school disclosed the fact that more than fifty students had parents or close relatives fighting in combat. The outcome of the conference caused the creation of a student support team. The students were able to meet twice a week, sharing their feelings about the absence of their family members who are fighting in the war. The fifth grader soon realizes how noble his dad is and why he went to war. He writes to his dad and tells him that he is proud of him and that he should be careful. He also made it known to his dad that he, too, wants to be a soldier when he grows up. This is a thrilling story dedicated to children all over the world, whose parents or close relatives are fighting in combat, or protecting people who are living in war-torn countries. Even though her father returned from the Vietnam War alive, Juju Sands considers him a casualty of the war. In this memoir, Sands recounts her life as a war daughter and narrates the damage inflicted on her as a result of her father's addictions and abuses. But more than a story of sadness, it is one of hope for others who suffer from the negative effects of war. Captivating and emotional, War Dad describes the destruction of one girl's spirit and self-esteem as her father battled with alcohol and heroin addiction, domestic abuse, crime, and prison. She recounts the events that could have taken her over the edge to a life of self-destruction. But she also stresses how she rose above the situation to choose to live a better life. An estimated 300,000 soldiers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. War Dad sheds light on not only the plight of these soldiers, but also demonstrates the harmful effects on their families, spouses, and children.

This book describes the unholy war perpetrated by the myriad state agencies, perhaps in some cases unwittingly, against loving fathers remaining in their children's lives post-divorce or separation. The author has had 5 Ombudsman Investigations to his credit, 3 were Parliamentary, his credentials are exemplary. He has never been cautioned, charged or arrested, yet he and his children were subjected to the most appalling gender discrimination imaginable by multiple state agencies operating in secrecy. This book is a 'how to' survive, and most importantly, protect vulnerable children and parents by exposing this institutional malpractice.

Our Fathers War written by Tom Mathews and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-05-10 with History categories.

A powerful and unique portrait of generational strife and changing styles of masculinity as seen through the stories of ten World War II veterans and their baby boomer sons. It is fair to say that Tom Mathews’s relations with his father, a veteran of World War II’s fabled 10th Mountain Division, were terrible. He came back from the war to a young son he’d barely met and proceeded to bully and browbeat him—for his own good, he thought. In the course of puzzling out almost fifty years of intermittent conflict, Mathews came to understand that their problems were not simply personal, they were generational—and widely shared by millions of other baby boomer sons. And so, to write this powerful book, which traces the kinetic effect of the war on the men who fought it, their sons, and their grandsons, Mathews has uncovered nine other dramatic and telling father-son tales of veterans in some ways missing in action and how internal war wounds shaped their lives as fathers. These include a combat infantryman whose life was saved by the fabled Audie Murphy, and a black member of the storied Tuskegee Airmen corps. In a moving final chapter, he and his father return together to Italy to revisit scenes from the war—and attempt, at long last, to forge their own separate peace. In a very real sense, Our Fathers’ War tells the secret history of World War II and its echoes down the years and generations. In the course of doing so, it offers a portrait of evolving styles of American manhood that many, many fathers and sons have been needing and awaiting.

Al Murray's (AKA The Pub Landlord) musing on his childhood where his fascination with history and all things war began. Have you ever watched a film with someone who, at the most dramatic scene, argues that the plane on screen hasn't been invented yet? Or that the tank rumbling towards the hero at the end of the film is the wrong tank altogether? Al Murray is that someone. Try as he might, he can’t help himself. Growing up in the 1970s, Al, with the help of his dad, became fascinated with the history of World War Two. They didn’t go to football; they went to battlefields. Because like so many of his generation whose childhood was all about Airfix, Action Man and Where Eagles Dare, he grew up in the cultural wake of the Second World War. Part memoir, part life obsession, this is Al Murray musing on what he knows best. And he’s sure to tell you things about history that you were never taught at school.

Compelling and moving real-life accounts of the impact on family life of the return of the troops at the end of the Second World War. Summer 1945. Britain was in jubilant mood. At last, the war was over. Soon the men would be coming home. Then everything would be fine: life would get back to normal. Or would it? Six long years of war had profoundly changed family life. For years, Dad had been a khaki figure in a photograph on the wall, a crumpled letter from overseas, an occasional visitor on weekend leave. Now he was here to stay, a stranger in a group that had learned to live without him - and was not always prepared to have him back. Most homecomings were joyful, never-to-be-forgotten moments of humour and hope. Others were hard. And there was no one to deal with the tears and the trauma. It would take hope and courage for families to live and love together again.

Wesley Johnston's Dad survived WWII but died when Wesley was only 8. Wesley had a few fragments of stories, a scrapbook and some WWII souvenirs but little notion of what his Dad had seen and done. After seeing Quentin Aanenson's autobiographical "A Fighter Pilot's Story", Wesley wondered what documentary his Dad would have made if he had lived. And so he resolved to find out. He soon realized that what we was learning about how to do this research could help others and began the Dad's War web site and workshops. Health forced him to stop the workshops, but the workshop book and web site continue to help others seeking to find and tell their own father's WWII story.
