This little book by the author began as a sad realization during the final days of his father's passing. The author while sitting with his father remembering their relationship said, "Dad I love you"; his father heard but did not reply. The author realized that his dad never told him what he thought about him as his son. At that moment, he longed for some verification that his father was proud of him in his journey to manhood. The author, having four sons of his own, realized that he also had not conveyed his pride in each of his son's development into manhood. He then began the effort to transfer the ideals of manhood to his sons; and verify their accomplishments. Not an uncommon story. Few fathers take the time to verify what our culture considers unnecessary. But to the author, the connection between father and son is most meaningful. The emptiness once felt, has been filled by telling each of his sons, "Your dad thinks you are a man of honor."

"Dishpan Dad: A Guy's Guide to Raising Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers" was written by and for a stay-at-home dad, but it's a book for essentially any parent who has children under age 5. In more than 80 chapters, the book delves into issues unique to at-home dads: being surrounded by moms-whose husbands eye you with suspicion or derision-crises of self worth, cultural dogma, stereotypes, emotional and intellectual challenges and more. It also gets down to the business of raising mannered, well-behaved, resilient kids. In "Dishpan Dad," fathers will learn where to get good parenting advice-and where not to get it-how to avoid doing laundry, at least for a while, the importance of mouth breathing, why candy for breakfast is a bad idea, the importance of a manly diaper bag and how much time and effort it takes to get kids ready and out the door. There is more, of course. Lots more, all packaged in a book that's educational, fun and easy to read.
