Heart & Soul founding editor Stephanie Stokes Oliver shows African American women how to soothe the soul, satisfy the mind, and revive the body 365 days a year. Written in an affirming style that is prescriptive but never preachy, fun but not frivolous, Daily Cornbread is a day-by-day compendium of Oliver’s creative ideas for leading an enjoyable and fulfilling life. On January 2, for example, Oliver suggests taking time out to "get happy" (do something that makes you happy an hour a day); to schedule a personal retreat; and to develop a strategic plan for the upcoming year. Reminiscent of Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance and Iyanla Vanzant’s Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Color, but with a special emphasis on nurturing the body as well as the mind, Daily Cornbread shows African American women how to make each day better.

There is a family of 5 daughters, each an outstanding cook—Jane, Ellen, Sibyl, Anne, Susan. And their brother’s wife, Yvonne, who cooks like a dream. Not surprisingly, there’s the matriarch, Esther Rose, also a great cook. The Daily Feast is the collection of irresistibly tasty, but easy-to-prepare recipes which have won their way onto the Graber families’ tables. These are the recipes they prepare for their guests and the dishes they make when the whole extended family gets together. For years, the Graber family cooks have passed their favorite recipes back and forth among themselves as they’ve left their Indiana home and scattered around the world, always learning to make and love the local dishes wherever they’ve lived. But always at the center of the growing collection were their own versions of beloved American dishes. In The Daily Feast, each of the 7 Graber cooks presents 3 complete menus—one for a soup meal, the second for a family week-night supper, and the third for a more elaborate guest dinner. In addition, the Grabers offer menus and recipes for their favorite special-occasion meals. An irresistible sampling of recipes found in The Daily Feast: Penne with Eggplant, Tomatoes, Fresh Mozzarella and Herbs Baked Chicken Caribe Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Lime and Cilantro Easy Blender Banana Nut Bread with Jamaica Glaze Cave Creek Carnitas Pear and Gorgonzola Salad with Orange Dressing Lemon-Barbecued Meat Loaves Fresh Tomato Chutney Bourbon-Glazed Salmon with Sesame Seeds Naan Bread Dijon, Bacon, and Potato Salad Grilled Italian Shrimp Skewers Sweet Ricotta Fritters Fresh Strawberry Pie Full-color photography of the finished dishes underlines the family’s daily practice of beauty and good taste around the table! Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Good Books and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of cookbooks, including books on juicing, grilling, baking, frying, home brewing and winemaking, slow cookers, and cast iron cooking. Our list includes French cooking, Swedish cooking, Austrian and German cooking, Cajun cooking, as well as books on jerky, canning and preserving, peanut butter, meatballs, oil and vinegar, bone broth, and more. Freedom Colonies written by Thad Sitton and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-01 with History categories.

A history of independent African American settlements in Texas during the Jim Crow era, featuring historical and contemporary photographs. In the decades following the Civil War, nearly a quarter of African Americans achieved a remarkable victory—they got their own land. While other ex-slaves and many poor whites became trapped in the exploitative sharecropping system, these independence-seeking individuals settled on pockets of unclaimed land that had been deemed too poor for farming and turned them into successful family farms. In these self-sufficient rural communities, often known as “freedom colonies,” African Americans created a refuge from the discrimination and violence that routinely limited the opportunities of blacks in the Jim Crow South. Freedom Colonies is the first book to tell the story of these independent African American settlements. Thad Sitton and James Conrad focus on communities in Texas, where blacks achieved a higher percentage of land ownership than in any other state of the Deep South. The authors draw on a vast reservoir of ex-slave narratives, oral histories, written memoirs, and public records to describe how the freedom colonies formed and to recreate the lifeways of African Americans who made their living by farming or in skilled trades such as milling and blacksmithing. They also uncover the forces that led to the decline of the communities from the 1930s onward, including economic hard times and the greed of whites who found legal and illegal means of taking black-owned land. And they visit some of the remaining communities to discover how their independent way of life endures into the twenty-first century. “Thad Sitton and James H. Conrad have made an important contribution to African American and southern history with their study of communities fashioned by freedmen in the years after emancipation.” —Journal of American History “This study is a thoughtful and important addition to an understanding of rural Texas and the nature of black settlements.” —Journal of Southern History

A Just Cause written by Harriet J. Schley and has been published by Dorrance Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-31 with Fiction categories.

As a divided America approaches Civil War, Thomas Andrews, his wife Lyddie, and their three children lead a comfortable though hard-working life on their Virginia farm. They also own slaves: Sadie and Jenny, who assist with the multiple responsibilities which fall to a farmer’s wife; and Moses and Shadrack, who work in the barn and the fields. This is for Thomas the “proper” way of doing things, the way he was brought up to believe in and respect, and has always known. But his ongoing conflict with his wife, whose family did not own slaves, and some eye-opening experiences of his own, begin to create a different perspective. In addition, events on the farm and actions by household members add to the need for a fresh look at the realities of an ongoing situation. As it happens, several of the enslaved people in our story find an early release from their involuntary servitude. And one emancipated family exemplifies the courage, hard work, and determination needed for the formerly enslaved to move on and create for themselves a better life. Similar issues regarding race are still with us, making this tale relevant to our current condition. About the Author: Harriet Schley was born in Manhattan, NYC, in 1934. She graduated from Swarthmore College with a major in Economics and Psychology in 1956, and earned a Master’s in American History from Morgan State College in 1971. She has been a Quaker since the age of 30. She currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
