Belakangan ini beredar buku berjudul "Sejarah Berdarah Sekte Salafi Wahabi"(SBSSW) yang dikarang oleh seseorang yang mengaku bernama Syaikh Idahram. Buku tersebut berisi gugatan dan caci maki terhadap apa yang disebut dengan "Gerakan Salafi Wahabi". Kalau sekadar kritik yang obyektif, tentu tak masalah. Karena setiap orang dan kelompok bisa saja mempunyai kecenderungan keliru, berlebihan, mau benar sendiri dan menyalahkan orang lain. Namun jika kritik dan celaan tersebut berlebihan dan berbohong bahkan mengandung manipulasi fakta, tentu saja hal ini menimbulkan masalah serius dan fitnah. Bayangkan saja, akibat beredarnya buku Syaikh Idahram itu, sebuah kegiatan pengajian ditutup karena dituduh Wahabi. Padahal, apa yang dimaksud dengan Wahabi itu tidak jelas definisinya. Jangan sampai masyarakat awam diadu domba oleh buku fitnah semacam itu. Belum reda kontroversi buku pertama sudah muncul buku kedua/'Mereka Memalsukan Kitab-kitab Karya Ulama Klasik'(MMKKUK); kemudian muncul lagi, "Ulama Sejagad Menggugat Salafi Wahabi" (USMSW). Maka situasi fitnah pun kian merebak. Sebagai manusia, Syaikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab tentu tak lepas dari dosa dan khilaf. Sebagai gerakan dakwah, Wahabi bukanlah tempat berkumpulnya para malaikat yang terjaga dari dosa. Karenanya, kami memberi judul buku ini "Bersikap Adil Kepada Wahabi", karena keadilan dan obyektivitas itu seruan Islam. Adapun sikap tidak jujur, mengadu domba, fanatik buta, itu ajaran setan. Buku ini juga mengupas dugaan adanya "penumpang gelap" di balik kampanye anti Wahabi. Mereka tak lain adalah kelompok Syiah, dan kelompok yang menjajakan paham Sepilis (sekularisme, pluralisme, dan liberalisme). Akibatnya, kritik terhadap Wahabi tak lagi jernih, tapi sudah keruh oleh bermacam kepentingan, khususnya dalam menghalanai implementasi nilai-nilai syariat Islam di bumi Nusantara. Menyikapi perbedaan pendapat secara membabi-buta dan mau menang sendiri di mana yang diklaim paling benar adalah hanya dirinya dan kelompoknya, sementara yang lain dianggap salah bahkan sesat; jelas merupakan sikap yang tidak bijak dan tidak sesuai dengan yang dipraktikkan oleh generasi salafush shalih. Pedang dan lisan adalah senjata orang mukmin. Dengan pedang, kaum muslimin menaklukkan negara-negara kafir dan memperluas wilayah teritorial daulah Islamiyah. Adapun dengan lisan, para ulama membungkam kesesatan ahlu bid’ah dan membuktikan kebenaran agama Islam. Amirul Mukminin Umar bin Abdil Aziz rahimahullah (w. 101 H) berkata, “Aku tidak suka jika para sahabat Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam tidak berbeda pendapat. Sebab, sekiranya mereka hanya mempunyai satu pendapat saja, maka orang-orang pun berada dalam kesempitan. Sungguh, mereka (para sahabat) adalah para imam yang diikuti pendapatnya, dimana jika seseorang mau mengambil salah satu pendapat mereka, maka dia bebas melakukannya.” -pustaka al-kautsar-

Before 9/11, few Westerners had heard of Wahhabism. Today, it is a household word. Frequently mentioned in association with Osama bin Laden, Wahhabism is portrayed by the media and public officials as an intolerant, puritanical, militant interpretation of Islam that calls for the wholesale destruction of the West in a jihad of global proportions. In the first study ever undertaken of the writings of Wahhabism's founder, Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1702-1791), Natana DeLong-Bas shatters these stereotypes and misconceptions. Her reading of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's works produces a revisionist thesis: Ibn Abd al-Wahhab was not the godfather of contemporary terrorist movements. Rather, he was a voice of reform, reflecting mainstream 18th-century Islamic thought. His vision of Islamic society was based upon a monotheism in which Muslims, Christians and Jews were to enjoy peaceful co-existence and cooperative commercial and treaty relations. Eschewing medieval interpretations of the Quran and hadith (sayings and deeds of the prophet Muhammad), Ibn Abd al-Wahhab called for direct, historically contextualized interpretation of scripture by both women and men. His understanding of theology and Islamic law was rooted in Quranic values, rather than literal interpretations. A strong proponent of women's rights, he called for a balance of rights between women and men both within marriage and in access to education and public space. In the most comprehensive study of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's interpretation of jihad ever written, DeLong-Bas details a vision in which jihad is strictly limited to the self-defense of the Muslim community against military aggression. Contemporary extremists like Osama bin Laden do not have their origins in Wahhabism, she shows. The hallmark jihadi focus on a cult of martyrdom, the strict division of the world into two necessarily opposing spheres, the wholescale destruction of both civilian life and property, and the call for global jihad are entirely absent from Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's writings. Instead, the militant stance of contemporary jihadism lies in adherence to the writings of the medieval scholar, Ibn Taymiyya, and the 20th century Egyptian radical, Sayyid Qutb. This pathbreaking book fills an enormous gap in the literature about Wahhabism by returning to the original writings of its founder. Bound to be controversial, it will be impossible to ignore.

The contributors to 'Global Salafism' are careful to map out not only the differences in the Salafist schools, but also to underscore the fluidity of this broad doctrinal tendency. They examine the phenomenon both in its regional manifestations - which demonstrate surprising diversities, ambivalences and contradictions - and in its shared essential doctrines. In so doing they highlight the ambivalences inherent in Salafism itself, and the Salafist believers' claim to be reviving Islamic thought for the modern age - albeit through the paradox of 'out-antiquing the antique' by appealing to a greater, older, purer authenticity.
