Il miele, il fumo. La sensualità, la spiritualità. Con Dal miele alle ceneri Claude Lévi-Strauss continua la sua seminale analisi delle opposizioni simboliche dell’umano attraverso lo studio di miti e leggende degli indios sudamericani. C’è un’antitesi fondamentale tra miele e tabacco: il primo è puramente naturale, perché può essere mangiato crudo ed è prodotto dalle api; il secondo, invece, viene consumato solo dopo essere stato incenerito e avvicina l’uomo all’etereo. In questa differenza vive il contrasto che c’è tra stato di natura e stato di cultura, lo stesso che ha condotto storicamente il pensiero mitico verso uno stadio avanzato e più complesso. In questo libro, la riflessione iniziata da Lévi-Strauss con Il crudo e il cotto – primo volume della Mitologica, la tetralogia che l’antropologo dedicò alle narrazioni tradizionali dei diversi popoli – abbandona le categorie culinarie per soffermarsi sui passaggi subito precedenti e successivi al pasto: il miele è infatti al di qua della cucina, è selvatico e seducente, attrae l’uomo verso la natura; il tabacco, d’altronde, è al di là della cucina, è velenoso, avvicina l’uomo al soprannaturale. L’uno è «infraculinario», l’altro è «metaculinario». Muovendosi tra questi opposti concetti, allo stesso tempo complementari e distanti, Lévi- Strauss oltrepassa la sfera della sensibilità – crudo e cotto, fresco e putrido, secco e umido – per affrontare uno dei momenti cruciali della storia del mondo occidentale: quello in cui il pensiero mitico, raggiungendo la sua espressione più alta, si è trasformato in riflessione filosofica e scientifica; quello in cui noi uomini siamo diventati dèi.
