Il titolo di questo volume, preso a prestito da un romanzo di Verne, ne riassume perfettamente il contenuto. Infatti, più che un libro di Cartografia generale, si tratta di un testo che spiega come si arrivi a disegnare una carta geografica partendo dall’osservazione della Terra. Non è un manuale onnicomprensivo (ce ne sono già molti e anche scaricabili dalla rete), piuttosto un sentiero da seguire, per scoprire da dove i cartografi siano partiti e quali problemi teorici e tecnici abbiano affrontato. Si vuole così offrire uno sguardo d’insieme sull’intero procedimento di mappatura, con particolare attenzione ai temi ed ai problemi fondamentali, risolti da Geodeti, Topografi e Cartografi e riguardanti i sistemi di riferimento applicati alle superfici curve. Come è noto, oggi la Geodesia satellitare ha sostituito quella tradizionale e tale fatto non può essere trascurato quando si parli di Cartografi a moderna. L’adozione del relativamente nuovo sistema di riferimento nazionale (nato nel 2012) suggerisce (o forse impone) di avere idee chiare in materia, in vista del prossimo ed auspicato completo aggiornamento di tutte le mappe in Italia. Data la formazione culturale dell’Autore, il volume risulta “GIS oriented”, consigliato cioè a chi lavora con questo strumento e non ha ancora avuto il tempo di consolidare le sue nozioni su sistemi di coordinate, proiezioni e loro trattamento in ambiente digitale.

This is the first book in English reviewing and updating the geology of the whole Apennines, one of the recent most uplifted mountains in the world. The Apennines are the place from which Steno (1669) first stated the principles of geology. The Apennines also represent amongst others, the finding/testing sites of processes and products like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, olistostromes and mélanges (argille scagliose), salinity crisis, geothermal fluids, thrust-top basins, and turbidites (first represented in a famous Leonardo's painting). As such, the Apennines are a testing and learning ground readily accessible and rich of any type of field data. A growing literature is available most of which is not published in widely available journals. The objective of the book is to provide a synthesis of current data and ideas on the Apennines, for the most part simply written and suitable for an international audience.
