So commit to doing the work which includes the reading and viewing the exercises that I lay out for you in the following pages. Commit not just for you but for those who love you and don't want to watch you suffer. If you are really serious about getting better, then I suggest you print out the following statement. Taking the time to put your intention in writing will help ensure that you stay committed and meet your goal. Mother Nature has a twisted sense of humor. Our bodies want to find balance or homeostasis, but She didn't make it easy to achieve. In fact, if you've been careless with your body, fed it a poor diet, washed your food down with alcohol, and failed to give it enough rest or exercise, then you have your work cut out for you. And you must take responsibility for that, not just for your physical well-being but for your emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, too. All these parts of what it means to be human, to be a healthy human, are interconnected and affect and influence each other. Fortunately, the body is resilient. The body can bounce back. Fortunately. This book will help you discover how resilient your body is. And how, if you understand and overcome your pain, you can pursue the life you desire...for yourself and your loved ones. You can do it. Let's get started.

AFTER the appearance of the sixth edition, Herbert French had resolved to take no active part in any future production. I decided that it was not only desirable but necessary to undertake considerable reconstruction in the next edition. Although the basic principles of diagnosis must be static for all time, the considerably increased scope of investigation by accessory aids demanded the inclusion of much new material and in many instances the production of entirely re-written rather than revised articles, especially as many of the earlier contributors have died or retired. By a more logical division and allocation among new contributors, considerable overlapping or repetition evident in earlier editions has been avoided and has resulted, it is hoped, in a more compact and generally useful work. It will be noticed that the title has been altered to conform to the actual contents. By judicious pruning the index has been simplified and abbreviated whilst retaining all essential references. This has been carried out by the publishers, Messrs. John Wright & Sons, of Bristol, with an accuracy ensured from their wide experience. The highest standard of format and printing confidently expected has been maintained. For many of the illustrations I am indebted to Professor J. Whillis, who is in charge of the Department of Medical Illustration, Guy's Hospital, and to Dr. T. H. Hills, Director of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Guy's Hospital. In other cases acknowledgment of the source is appended to the picture. To the deletion of obsolete material and the inclusion of much that is new must be added the editorial complication of extensive cross-references when several independent contributors have to be correlated—a difficulty enhanced by the long interval that has been unavoidable between the submitting of manuscripts and publication. I have been exceptionally fortunate in having as counsellor, collaborator, and contributor Sir Adolphe Abrahams. The study of paleopathology has two very different constituencies, the medical scientist and the zoologist/paleontologist/anthropologist. Their investigative procedures and professional jargon are different, sometimes to the point of mutual incomprehensibility. Paleontologists/anthropologists/zoologists have a limited data base for the characterization and interpretation of pathology. This must come from the human and veterinary medical experience. What, beyond intellectual satisfaction, can the health care community expect from this relationship? The past history of the appearance and dispersal of infectious disease and cancer is of considerable theoretical importance and leads to new insights on the nature and transmission of diseases that are otherwise ambiguous. The discovery of rheumatoid arthritis in pre-Columbian North America exemplifies insights gained. The current effort delineates osseous impact of disease (as manifest in clinical populations diagnosed in life), representation in the zoologic, paleontologic and anthropologic record, and assessment techniques that can be confidently applied. The chapters form “columns” that provide the foundation for scientific critical thinking. The actual integration of the information is in its application. Our purpose is to provide a data base and atlas of actually documented skeletal impact of diseases (as population phenomenon), an initial data base of reported skeletal pathology, and a methodology for expanding this to new arenas. The first section of the book examines the scientific basis of paleopathology, its transition from speculation-based musings, resolution of misconceptions and the denouement of paleo-epidemiology. The second section provides holistic analysis of the gamut of pathology/diseases with significant skeletal impact, with a validated archeologic/zoological/paleontological record. The third section provides a glossary to resolve the semantic challenges inherent to interdisciplinary efforts. The fourth section provides an atlas of pathology representation in the fossil record. Ultimately, this book intends to present a scientifically-validated approach to recognition of disease in the archeological, zoological and paleontological record, superseding previous speculation-based offerings.
