The yoga and classical dance traditions of India have been inextricably entwined for millennia. The exacting hand gestures, postures and movements of Indian classical dance can only be achieved through yogic concentration. Conversely, the esthetics, symmetry, and dynamism of dance enhance the practice of yoga. These two traditions, so complementary and essential to one another, are united and explicated for the first time in A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance. Twenty-five years ago Roxanne Kamayani Gupta embarked on a journey of dance and yoga, yearning to unlock their mysteries and discover their common origins. As a twenty-year-old student from America she was miraculously and mysteriously absorbed into Indian culture, became a Hindu, and began an odyssey so unusual and unique that the reader will be enchanted by its telling. Choosing the path of the dancer, Roxanne Gupta accomplished what no Western woman had done before: being accepted and trained by Indian masters and then performing in the Indian classical traditions--from the palaces of maharajas to the arts festivals of Europe and America--while at the same time achieving a doctorate in the anthropology of religion and being initiated into a number of yogic traditions. Having mastered the classical form of Kuchipudi dance and studied with teachers of the hatha and kriya yoga traditions, she brings together these two great streams of consciousness and practice. In this tantric approach to yoga and dance, expressed through the body and through a yoga of emotions, we see the traditions embodied in a manner that embraces the totality of the human experience. The result is the dance of the yogini, the sacred feminine initiatress who dances with one foot in nature and the other in the realm of the gods. With extensive photographs of innovative yoga routines, Roxanne Kamayani Gupta distills her experience into techniques for yogic study certain to assist students of all levels to achieve a dynamic, beautiful, and graceful practice.

Like dancers on a stage, each and every moment, as in each and every way, we put on the costume of a different part of our personality in order to satisfy the particular movement called for in the moment. The dance represents the relative truth only which is a perception of the personality as it is reflected through the movements of the environment of the dance. But, what, in truth, is the nature of the music we are dancing to? It is on the rim of the wheel that encircles the field of activity, the Universe, where the dance begins. In order for there to be a field of limitlessness there must of necessity be a field of limitations. This field of limitations is that which is confined within the boundary of the Universe. A limitation denotes a boundary upon which restrictions are placed. These restrictions are the products of our actions, and are Karmic in nature. Because this field of limitation is bounded and set apart it can be likened to an arena in which we are pitted against one another in a field of sin and punishment.

Bharatha Natya Yoga written by Aparna Ramaswamy Ph D and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-25 with Performing Arts categories.

Bharatha Natyam is a classical dance style from Southern India that is practiced as an interpretive storytelling dance. The ashta anga are the eight principles behind yoga practices, as described in the text of Yogasutra by Patanjali. By linking the ashta anga principles of yoga with the practice of Bharatha Natyam, this book proposes that the latter be understood as Bharatha Natya Yoga. Hermeneutic inquiry draws from several texts of Indian dance & yoga - such as Yogasutra and Natyasastra, while the author uses an engaging narrative style of writing to describe the multifaceted phenomenon of dancing. The narrative describes the author's perspective as a researcher with a lifetime of dancing experiences while heuristic inquiry offers an embodied reference for the concept of rasa. The hermeneutic inquiry provides an understanding of the experience of rasa as it relates to the concept of samadhi, a goal of ashta anga yoga. Despite its long history, it is important that Bharatha Natyam does not become limited to an entertainment or storytelling form. This book seeks to re-claim its essence and re-present it as Bharatha Natya Yoga.

Moving Consciously written by Sondra Fraleigh and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-21 with Performing Arts categories.

The popularity of yoga and Zen meditation has heightened awareness of somatic practices. Individuals develop the conscious embodiment central to somatics work via movement and dance, or through touch from a skilled teacher or therapist often called a somatic bodyworker. Methods of touch and movement foster generative processes of consciousness in order to create a fluid interconnection between sensation, thought, movement, and expression. In Moving Consciously , Sondra Fraleigh gathers essays that probe ideas surrounding embodied knowledge and the conscious embodiment of movement and dance. Using a variety of perspectives on movement and dance somatics, Fraleigh and other contributors draw on scholarship and personal practice to participate in a multifaceted investigation of a thriving worldwide phenomenon. Their goal: to present the mental and physical health benefits of experiencing one's inner world through sensory awareness and movement integration. A stimulating addition to a burgeoning field, Moving Consciously incorporates concepts from East and West into a timely look at life-changing, intertwined practices that involve dance, movement, performance studies, and education. Contributors: Richard Biehl, Robert Bingham, Hillel Braude, Alison East, Sondra Fraleigh, Kelly Ferris Lester, Karin Rugman, Catherine Schaeffer, Jeanne Schul, and Ruth Way.
