City Folk written by Daniel J. Walkowitz and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-22 with History categories.

This is the story of English Country Dance, from its 18th century roots in the English cities and countryside, to its transatlantic leap to the U.S. in the 20th century, told by not only a renowned historian but also a folk dancer, who has both immersed himself in the rich history of the folk tradition and rehearsed its steps. In City Folk, Daniel J. Walkowitz argues that the history of country and folk dancing in America is deeply intermeshed with that of political liberalism and the ‘old left.’ He situates folk dancing within surprisingly diverse contexts, from progressive era reform, and playground and school movements, to the changes in consumer culture, and the project of a modernizing, cosmopolitan middle class society. Tracing the spread of folk dancing, with particular emphases on English Country Dance, International Folk Dance, and Contra, Walkowitz connects the history of folk dance to social and international political influences in America. Through archival research, oral histories, and ethnography of dance communities, City Folk allows dancers and dancing bodies to speak. From the norms of the first half of the century, marked strongly by Anglo-Saxon traditions, to the Cold War nationalism of the post-war era, and finally on to the counterculture movements of the 1970s, City Folk injects the riveting history of folk dance in the middle of the story of modern America.

The Gentrification Of Nightlife And The Right To The City written by Laam Hae and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-31 with Social Science categories.

In The Gentrification of Nightlife and the Right to the City, Hae explores how nightlife in New York City, long associated with various subcultures of social dancing, has been recently transformed as the city has undergone the gentrification of its space and the post-industrialization of its economy and society. This book offers a detailed analysis of the conflicts emerging between newly transplanted middle-class populations and different sectors of nightlife actors, and how these conflicts have led the NYC government to enforce “Quality of Life” policing over nightlife businesses. In particular, it provides a deep investigation of the zoning regulations that the municipal government has employed to control where certain types of nightlife can or cannot be located. Hae demonstrates the ways in which these struggles over nightlife have led to the “gentrification of nightlife,” while infringing on urban inhabitants’ rights of access to spaces of diverse urban subcultures – their “right to the city.” The author also connects these struggles to the widely documented phenomenon of the increasing militarization of social life and space in contemporary cities, and the right to the city movements that have emerged in response. The story presented here involves dynamic and often contradictory interactions between different anti/pro-nightlife actors, illustrating what “actually existing” gentrification and post-industrialization looks like, and providing an urgent example for experts in related fields to consider as part of a re-theorization of gentrification and post-industrialization.

In Kinesthetic City, author SanSan Kwan explores the contentious nature of Chineseness in diaspora through the lens of moving bodies as they relate to place, time, and identity. She locates her study in five Chinese urban sites--Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, New York's Chinatown, and the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles--at momentous historical turning points to parse out key similarities and differences in the construction of Chineseness. The moving bodies she considers are not only those in performances by some of the most well-known Chinese dance companies in these cities, but also her own as she navigates urban Chinese spaces. By focusing primarily on kinesthesia--the body's awareness of motion--to gather information rather than more traditional modes of sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste, she highlights the importance of motion in the determination of space. In examining in these specific places at these precise historical moments, Kwan illuminates how moving bodies contribute to the production of those places and those moments. For Kwan, Chinese communities in diaspora provide particularly salient examples of how when and where our bodies are help to determine who we are. Whether engaged in otherwise unremarkable walking or in highly choreographed acts of political protest, human movement exists in dialogue with the kinesthetic of these city spaces, helping Chinese communities make meaning of themselves away from mainland China. As a whole, Kinesthetic City offers dance studies ways to extend movement analysis to study not only concert, folk or social dance, but also quotidian movement and urban flow.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Cologne (Englisches Institut), course: HS "Words, image, sound", 28 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Since the founding of New York City people from all around the world have flocked there in search of a better reality and fulfillment of their dreams. Some of them found what they were looking for and others did not. Nevertheless, the constant fluctuation of masses from every corner of the world to New York City only increased in the course of time. At the beginning of a new era filled with hectic and rushing, this city has become a symbol for movement, regardless of its form and purpose. The spatial, financial, cultural movement, the movement of information or myriad of immigrants is of essence in this city. Movement in space and time is in its every shape also the primary subject matter of Terpsihora ́s art- the dance. Aside from that, dance as art discipline focuses on the human body using it as clay in its “moulding“ process just like the city “moulds“ in a certain way its inhabitants. The founder of Modern dance for men in America, Ted Shawn, is said to have commented: “Dance is the only art of which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made“. When it is taken into consideration that the energy of movement in all its forms in New York City relates to the energy of movement in dance, it is not curious at all that a number of dancing styles have been developed or have experienced an incredible flourishing in New York City. The striving to pursue an artistic career in this city is for a lot of dancers the sheer energy for dancing itself. Their life motto - `If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere'. The sublime relationship between the city and the artist and the overwhelming impression New York City gives on an artist is very perspicuously ilustrated in a comment of the young architectural critic Lewis Mumford: The world, at that moment, opened before me, challenging me, beckoning me, demanding something of me ... Here was my city, immense, overpowering, flooded with energy and light ... transmitting through me the great mysterious will ... and the promise of the new day that was still to come (Lewis Mumford 1982:130).
