In folktales told throughout much of the Brazilian Amazon, dolphins take human form, attend raucous dances and festivals, seduce men and women, and carry them away to a city beneath the river. They are encantados, or Enchanted Beings, capable of provoking death or madness, but also called upon to help shamanic healers. Male dolphins—accomplished dancers who appear dressed in dapper straw hats, white suits, and with shiny black shoes—reportedly father numerous children. The females are said to lure away solitary fishermen. Both sinister and charming, these characters resist definition and thus domination; greedy and lascivious outsiders, they are increasingly symbolic of a distinctly Amazonian culture politically, socially, economically, and environmentally under seige. Candace Slater examines these stories in Dance of the Dolphin, both as folk narratives and as representations of culture and conflict in Amazonia. Her engaging study discusses the tales from the viewpoints of genre, performance, and gender, but centers on them as responses to the great changes sweeping the Amazon today. According to Slater, these surprisingly widespread tales reflect Amazonians' own mixed reactions to the ongoing destruction of the rainforest and the resulting transformations in the social as well as physical landscape. Offering an informed view of Brazilian culture, this book crosses the boundaries of folklore, literature, anthropology, and Latin American studies. It is one of the very few studies to offer an overview of the changes taking place in Amazonia through the eyes of ordinary people. "This book is a rich collection of stories about the transformation of dolphins in the city of enchantment. . . . The joy in this book is not just its vibrant analysis and careful relating of tradition and lore, but also its uncanny accurateness in capturing the very essence of Amazonia."-Darrell Posey, Journal of Latin American Studies "Slater's fluid prose reads like a novel for those interested in Amazonian culture and folklore, while her integrated approach makes this a must read for those interested in innovative methodology."-Lisa Gabbert, Western Folklore

Donald the Dolphin was traumatised after his partner Donna the Dolphin died. He attempted to beach himself because he was so sad. Luckily, some people spotted him on the beach and pushed him back into the sea. He also had very good friends who cheered him up by performing a sea concert with all their fellow sea creatures. Flipper and his mum, Phillipa Dolphin, were the main acts in the concert who were to perform dance tricks in the centre of the sea orchestra. Before Flipper and Phillipa performed, they needed to have a feed, but unfortunately they were confronted with a dangerous situation. Would they make it to perform for their beloved friend Donald the Dolphin?

Dance To A Dolphin S Song written by Horace E. Dobbs and has been published by Jonathan Cape this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Depression, Mental categories.

After studying dolphins for many years, Dr Horace Dobbs came to the conclusion that these highly intelligent mammals were using their brains in a way that could benefit human beings. To test his theory he decided to step outside the confines of his scientific training and film an experiment for television. That film, "The Dolphin's Touch", records how he invited three people suffering from different forms of stress and depression to swim with a wild dolphin off the Irish coast. In the case of the middle-aged man the encounter had a dramatic effect, while the outlook of two younger participants improved significantly. For Dr Dobbs they served to confirm other similar transformations and persuaded him that it might be possible, through video film and audio tapes of dolphin song, to bring the healing power of dolphins to anyone unable to experience it at first hand. The result leaves, he argues, little room for doubt that dolphins can generate a sense of well-being in people. In this book the author conveys not only the joy to be experienced when cavorting in the sea with a wild dolphin, he also provides clues to the mental dexterity and perception of one of the smallest of the whale family.

Dolphins Dance begins when a Honolulu man who has lived with a terminal illness for many years determines that it is time to gracefully exit this world. After a final farewell, his ashes are spread in the ocean beyond Makapuu Point. His spirit is reborn as a Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin along the coast of California. We follow the life of this dolphin as he is drawn back to the Hawaiian Islands. The story blends scientific fact about dolphin behavior with fantasy. Issues that affect their existence are explored by looking at the world through the eyes of a dolphin. The dolphin, Strong Nose, rescues a college student, Jackson, after she has a surfing accident. Their lives are irrevocably altered by the experience. Strong Nose begins a quest to understand and communicate with humans. Jackie joins a marine mammal rescue team that saves a female dolphin from a failing marine park and releases it into the wild. The rescued dolphin and Strong Nose meet and form a bond. Together, they travel back to the Hawaiian Islands. Readers who love the ocean and are fascinated by the mammals of the sea will enjoy this novel. The author hopes that by sharing this story more people will be moved to protect and preserve our ocean. This is the second edition of Dolphins Dance. The story is the same, but the voice and the writing have been greatly improved. The words are more solidly crafted, the characters are more developed, and the message, I believe, is stronger. This second edition is the only version of the story that is authorized by me. The first edition, Dolphins' Dance (note the apostrophe), was published under contract with a vanity press publisher. My disappointment with their pricing and services is well documented. It took nearly four years before they would sell the rights of my book back to me. Please don't purchase any of the original books. I'm very happy that I am able to bring this revised version to you at a reasonable price. I hope you enjoy it.
