"Dances on the Plains" seeks to reflect the period between March and July, 2014, during the Nigerian National Conference 2014, when a cross section of Nigerians at home and in diaspora were selected, gathered in Abuja, Nigeria and mandated to discuss, negotiate, ventilate and proffer solutions to all the nagging problems presently troubling and militating against all facets of the Nation: socially, economically, religiously and so on: presumably, in an unfettered and secure milieu. "Dances of the Plains," coming after; "Clementines," "Sentinels" and "My Song," also contains a few poems that I was able to write down, between November, 2013 and July, 2014 (in England and Nigeria). I danced in my private pantomime and also danced with the patriots. This collection of Poems, reflects the various dances executed by others and I, culminating in the unique curtain-call in Abuja.'' There are also tributes to: Nelson Mandela, Chinua Achebe, Maya Angelou, Dora Akunyili and Trayvon Martin. Another collection by Orok Otu Duke- (Author of: "Clementines," "Sentinels" and "My Song").

Sentinels (Farewell Bakassi: Selected Poems and Articles), denotes and connotes knowledge, powered by fervent passions, a lodestone of ideas, ideals and values. It is a confectionary of treasured experiences, going down memory lanes; replete with bitter -sweet recollections; of retrievable and irretrievable losses; delightful, regrettable and treasurable. It is an enriching historical, mythological, mythical analogy -a collection of time-tested tributes, deserving of recall. Sentinels is a chain of past, present and future, powered by fervent research; a passionate narrative. It is an inspirational, coordinated labour of love. I do recommend it highly for all who cherish the power of ideas, values and ideals. Far more than three quarters of Sentinels are made of such very passion-inflamed poems. A few of such emblematic collections can be sampled, here, as foretastes to numerous enticing, appetizing captions. Among these are: "Farewell Bakassi", "The Homestead (To our lost Bakassi)", "The Scars we see (For our Bakassi People)"; all bemoan the Nigeria's reckless loss of the Bakassi Peninsula to the Republic of Cameroons, vis-a-vis the plight of beloved Nigerians, so marooned in a strange Republic, and the human pains and tribulations thereof! In similar veins, and perhaps much more so, Sentinels is a collection of a variety of ice-creamy stuffs or tastes that the lickers would relish long, after every lick, bite, in bits and pieces, all very emblematic of Duke's intimate, vicarious attachments to his families, his beloved state, country and political party, the PDP; some are tributes to his admirers and admirees, friends and iconic personalities and others are patriotic lamentations of traumatic events, avoidable and unavoidable.

This accessible and unusually wide-ranging book is essential reading for anyone interested in postcolonial and African American women's writing. It provides a valuable gender and culture inflected critical introduction to well established women writers: Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Margaret Atwood, Suniti Namjoshi, Bessie Head, and others from the U.S.A., India, Africa, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and introduces emergent writers from South East Asia, Cyprus and Oceania. Engaging with and clarifying contested critical areas of feminism and the postcolonial; exploring historical background and cultural context, economic, political, and psychoanalytic influences on gendered experience, it provides a cohesive discussion of key issues such as cultural and gendered identity, motherhood, mothertongue, language, relationships, women's economic constraints and sexual politics.

Winner of the Anthony Award for Best First Novel Winner of the Gumshoe Award for Best First Novel Winner of the Barry Award for Best First Novel Winner of the Macavity Award for Best First Novel There's nothing unusual about the sound of a gunshot in Twelve Sleep. Here in remotest Wyoming, where elk roam the pine forests and cougars prowl the mountains, everyone owns a gun. But when Joe Pickett hears two sharp cracks ring out months before hunting season, it's his job to investigate. As game warden in Twelve Sleep, father-of-two Joe Pickett is not only badly paid and poorly housed, but deeply unpopular. So when the source of the shots - a well-known poacher - gets off scott-free after a humiliating confrontation, the locals are delighted. And then the poacher turns up dead in the Pickett's backyard. Charged with investigating the first murder he's ever encountered, Joe soon finds himself swamped with questions. How did the dead man get to his house? What was in the empty cooler by his side? And why do his colleagues want to sweep the case under the rug? Battling grudge-holding neighbours, corrupt officials and out-of-town activists, Joe begins to unravel a mystery that threatens the life and the family he loves.

One of the greatest challenges for English language arts teachers today is the call to engage students in more complex texts. Tim Gillespie, who has taught in public schools for almost four decades, has found the lenses of literary criticism a powerful tool for helping students tackle challenging literary texts. Tim breaks down the dense language of critical theory into clear, lively, and thorough explanations of many schools of critical thought---reader response, biographical, historical, psychological, archetypal, genre based, moral, philosophical, feminist, political, formalist, and postmodern. Doing Literary Criticism gives each theory its own chapter with a brief, teacher-friendly overview and a history of the approach, along with an in-depth discussion of its benefits and limitations. Each chapter also includes ideas for classroom practices and activities. Using stories from his own English classes--from alternative programs to advance placement and everything in between--Tim provides a wealth of specific classroom-tested suggestions for discussion, essay and research paper topics, recommended texts, exam questions, and more. The accompanying CD offers abbreviated overviews of each theory (designed to be used as classroom handouts, examples of student work, collections of quotes to stimulate discussion and writing, an extended history of women writers, and much more. Ultimately, Doing Literary Criticism offers teachers a rich set of materials and tools to help their students become more confident and able readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

Born On The Continent written by Getrude Matshe and has been published by Createspace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Getrude Ruwadzano Munyaradzi Matshe is a vibrant bundle of African energy whose drive, zest and passion for life inspires others. Born in Zimbabwe 39 years ago Getrude now lives in Wellington, New Zealand with her husband and three children. In this autobiography she shares her many adventures on the road to arriving in the Land of the Long White Cloud. This wonderfully inspirational and motivational narrative illustrates what can be accomplished by a person who has determination and faith in achieving personal goals. Her guiding philosophy of life is encapsulated in the African concept of Ubuntu. This refers to the respect and compassion people show one another. Her own life story reflects Ubuntu as she finds herself in difficult situations and experiences support from individuals who are friends and mere acquaintances. She also tells of the human loss and heartache caused by AIDS in Africa. She asks that people become open and available to each other as they share their space on the planet.

Moth Smoke written by Mohsin Hamid and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-04 with Fiction categories.

The debut novel from the internationally bestselling author of Exit West and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize Moth Smoke, Mohsin Hamid’s deftly conceived first novel, immediately marked him as an uncommonly gifted and ambitious young literary talent to watch when it was published in 2000. It tells the story of Daru Shezad, who, fired from his banking job in Lahore, begins a decline that plummets the length of Hamid’s sharply drawn, subversive tale. Fast-paced and unexpected, Moth Smoke was ahead of its time in portraying a contemporary Pakistan far more vivid and complex than the exoticized images of South Asia then familiar to the West. It established Mohsin Hamid as an internationally important writer of substance and imagination and the premier Pakistani author of our time, a promise he has amply fulfilled with each successive book. This debut novel, meanwhile, remains as compelling and deeply relevant to the moment as when it appeared more than a decade ago.
