Why is hope so fundamental to our existence? Hope is increasingly being acknowledged as an important factor both for people's resilience and for positive therapeutic outcomes. In considering this and many other questions, this evocative textbook introduces the reader to the repeated shifting, or 'dance', between hope and despair that is so often encountered by practitioners working with profoundly traumatised individuals. This book brings a sharp focus to the ways in which therapeutic relationships can draw individuals out of the constant oscillation between light and dark. It provides an insightful and thoughtful discussion not just about despair itself, but about how to be with despair. Informed by the author's own years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, this engaging and stimulating book provides practical guidance on how students, trainees and practitioners can inspire fresh hope in deeply troubled clients.

Theology is inherently theatrical, rooted in God's performance on the world stage and oriented toward faith seeking performative understanding in the theatre of everyday life. Following Hans Urs von Balthasar's magisterial, five-volume 'Theo-Drama', a growing number of theologians and pastors have been engaging more widely with theatre and drama, producing what has been recognized as a

Discover how everything changed when God was born. Everything seems different at the end of the year. We put lights on our houses to dispel the growing darkness, Christmas music floods local radio stations, apple cider and cranberry sauce are again on the menu, and wrapping paper and tape are always ready. Things just look, smell, and taste differently during the Advent and Christmas season, and these differences are a sign to us that God is about to do something radical and different. Christmas is when God surrounded the divine with senses of his own. That first noel was when God had eyes to see suffering, ears to hear our cries, and hands to hold those in need, and all of these senses were bundled in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. “This will be a sign to you,” the angel told the shepherds, and they traveled to Bethlehem and found a child. What signs do you see during the Advent and Christmas season that point you to the divine? Additional components to use the book as a four-week small group study include a leader guide and DVD/Video Sessions featuring Matt Rawle. This book also includes a link to free downloadable teaching resources for children and youth.

The present volume is a highly comprehensive assessment of the postcolonial short story since the thirty-six contributions cover most geographical areas concerned. Another important feature is that it deals not only with exclusive practitioners of the genre (Mansfield, Munro), but also with well-known novelists (Achebe, Armah, Atwood, Carey, Rushdie), so that stimulating comparisons are suggested between shorter and longer works by the same authors. In addition, the volume is of interest for the study of aspects of orality (dialect, dance rhythms, circularity and trickster figure for instance) and of the more or less conflictual relationships between the individual (character or implied author) and the community. Furthermore, the marginalized status of women emerges as another major theme, both as regards the past for white women settlers, or the present for urbanized characters, primarily in Africa and India. The reader will also have the rare pleasure of discovering Janice Kulik Keefer's “Fox,” her version of what she calls in her commentary “displaced autobiography’” or “creative non-fiction.” Lastly, an extensive bibliography on the postcolonial short story opens up further possibilities for research.

In Chicago's vibrant Little Village, the air pulses with the rhythm of salsa, bachata, and the dreams of its residents. Rosie Delgado, a former ballet prodigy haunted by a silent past, has traded pointe shoes for the raw energy of street dance, finding solace in her sun-drenched studio, a haven for at-risk youth. Here, dance is more than movement; it's a lifeline, a language of hope woven into the fabric of the community. Mateo Vargas, a gifted but troubled student, embodies the struggles Rosie faces daily. His natural grace masks a life caught in the crossfire of escalating gang violence. Rosie sees in him a reflection of her younger self, a flicker of potential threatened by the encroaching shadows. Into this vibrant, precarious world steps Ahmed El-Sayed, a social worker whose quiet strength resonates in the gentle cadence of his voice. Captivated by Rosie's fire and the defiant spirit she ignites in her students, Ahmed finds himself drawn into her orbit, discovering an unexpected solace in the fiery rhythms of salsa, a language that unlocks passions he keeps carefully hidden. Together, Rosie and Ahmed envision a vibrant dance showcase, a fusion of Cuban rumba, Egyptian zaffa, and the myriad rhythms that echo through Chicago’s streets. But their shared dream faces mounting threats. Mateo's situation worsens as the gang’s grip tightens. The looming shadow of gentrification threatens to displace them all, jeopardizing the studio's very existence. And the ghosts of Rosie's past resurface, sharp and jagged, threatening the fragile trust she’s placed in Ahmed. As his traditional Egyptian family arrives, Ahmed finds himself torn between the comfort of his heritage and the intoxicating pull of a future with Rosie, a future that seems increasingly impossible. As the showcase approaches, the pressures converge into a storm. Mateo makes a desperate choice, escalating the danger. Rosie withdraws, her fear a wall against Ahmed’s gentle attempts to reach her. The cultural chasms that once drew them together now threaten to swallow their love whole. The culminating performance becomes a battleground—a fight not just for their students' dreams, but for their own. Rosie, fueled by a renewed sense of purpose, pours her pain and resilience into a breathtaking performance, her voice finally breaking free. Ahmed, inspired by her courage, confronts his family, choosing love over tradition.

“Themes out of School . . . cannot help but urge us to think, in fresh and undistracted ways, about the world that actually confronts us.” —Jay Parini, Hudson Review In the first essay of this book, Stanley Cavell characterizes philosophy as a “willingness to think not about something other than what ordinary human beings think about, but rather to learn to think undistractedly about things that ordinary human beings cannot help thinking about, or anyway cannot help having occur to them, sometimes in fantasy, sometimes as a flash across a landscape.” Fantasies of film and television and literature, flashes across the landscape of literary theory, philosophical discourse, and French historiography give Cavell his starting points in these twelve essays. Here is philosophy in and out of “school,” understood as a discipline in itself or thought through the works of Shakespeare, Molière, Kierkegaard, Thoreau, Brecht, Makavejev, Bergman, Hitchcock, Astaire, and Keaton.

Lessons from the Porchis Ed Poole's thoughtful memoir of life's lessons, which he shares with endearing charm and good-natured heart. The book is a thoughtful journey and an engaging reminiscence.Lessons from the Porchwill allow the reader to consider questions such as: Have you wondered how you arrived at your current stop along your journey? Have you ever asked the question, "What am I supposed to be learning from this experience?" How can I leave this world a bit better than it was when I found it? Although written about his own experience battling depression, the book is meant for anyone embarking on a journey to know themselves and cultivate new friendships. We all have places from which we learn life's lessons. For some it may be sitting beside a meandering stream. For this author, the place to which he returned to understand his journey was the porch that surrounded his house as he grew up. Metaphorically, Poole's porch represents how he either has or has not accepted changes in his life. The dilemma about how and when to leave his porch goes back to his early boyhood when his mom would always say, "Eddie, don't get too close to the edge of the porch, because you might fall off."
