Lucid, tender, and strangely troubling, the poems in The Asylum Dance - which won the Whitbread Prize for Poetry - are hymns to the tension between the sanctuary of home and the lure of escape. This is territory that Burnside has made his own: a domestic world threaded through with myth and longing, beyond which lies a no man's land - the 'somewhere in between' - of dusk or dawn, of mists or sudden light, where the epiphanies are. Using the framework of four long poems, 'Ports', 'Settlements', 'Fields' and 'Roads', the poet balances presence with absence; we are shown the homing instinct - felt in the blood and marrow - as a pull to refuge, simplicity, and a safe haven, while at the same time hearing the siren call from the world beyond: the thrilling expectancy of fairground or dancehall, the possibilities of the open road. With a confident open line and complete command of the language, John Burnside writes with grace, agility and profound philosophical purpose, confirming his position in the front rank of contemporary poetry.

Paying for friendship, angry knicker-flashing, gay cruising at a medieval carnival ... not exactly what an outsider might expect of folks from the small towns of Ireland. These short stories paint a wonderfully unexpected portrait of a place and its people in a time of great change.

This collection of Kafkaesque miniatures offers a terrifying vision of the Worcester asylum where the writer's uncle spent most of his adult life. The asylum theme zips into overdrive in a series of sometimes darkly comic flashes threaded throughout the book. Dadio and June Spoon have created their own asylum in the burbs, one in which they 'incarcerate' their children within the confines of the home through guilt control, paternal manipulation, money, and demands bordering on the insane.

Rahyan, a young Bengali engineer from Bangladesh goes to Berlin to study computer science. He finds himself in a motley group of his countrymen, students and asylum seekers. They are organised in an association called the Golden Boys Association. Rayhan meets Saad, an eclectic philosopher who becomes a victim of collective ignorance. He also falls for Renata, whose love gives him the courage to fight against parental domination and bigotry. He goes to stay with Uncle Kabir, an asylum seeker, who becomes President of the Association in order to make it better and popular. The president succeeds little in his effort and in the end fails to accomplish what he had promised to do. The drama is played out through parties and picnics, love affairs and fisticuffs and reaches its climax when the German court bans, just before the celebration of the Independence Day of Bangladesh, all the activities of the Association till the court reaches a verdict. The novel mirrors not only a microcosm of a society portrayed through the Association, but also a social history of divided Berlin in the early eighties, told with irony, wit, and humour.

1911: Inside an asylum on the edge of the Yorkshire moors, where men and women are kept apart by high walls and barred windows, there is a ballroom, vast and beautiful. For one bright evening every week, the inmates come together and dance... This is the story of John, an Irishman with a past cloaked in mystery - only time will tell why he has been locked up in the asylum. Of Clemency, who has been incarcerated by her father and brother after starving herself rather than marry an abusive man. Of Ella, who was dragged away from the factory where she worked after smashing a window. Of Charles, a doctor and eugenics enthusiast. And in the ballroom one May night, the lives of two people are set to change for ever...
