The lament of two teens - There's nothing to read - was the trigger to the creation of Daryl Devore's New Adult romance - Dancing in Circles. One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie Anderson, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert Holiday, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul. But - is Julie's love strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them? Social prejudice. Hatred. Violence. And is she willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Tied to the brotherhood of his gang, Robert is torn between his duties to them and his desire to spend his life with Julie. Can circumstance even allow him to lay down his ties to the gang so that he may hold onto his newfound love? Sacrifices must be made, but only time will tell if it is enough.

"Many times in a tearful voice, I used to beg him to stop, saying, "Please, Daddy. Please stop. It hurts." I would promise him that I would never again commit whatever offense it was that had landed me in that terrible predicament. Still, he never showed any mercy. My pleas fell on deaf ears" (p. 1). From the first page, Anthony Miller's tear-jerking account of the physical and verbal abuse he endured at the hands of his father tugs at the heartstrings. Looking back on his childhood and examining his memories, Miller uses his skill with words to relay the terror, the agony, and the physical and emotional scars that resulted from the abuse he experienced. He delves into the dread and confusion caused by being forced to create the implement of his own abuse, as his father often made him do. He also explores the cognitive dissonance created by an authority figure, a parent, who says he loves you but causes so much pain. Dancing in Circles is a must-read account of child abuse through the eyes of the child and a warning about the long-term effects of those traumatic experiences on the lives of the abused.

As the nomadic hunters and gatherers of the ancient Near East turned to agriculture for their livelihood and settled into villages, religious ceremonies involving dancing became their primary means for bonding individuals into communities and households into villages. So important was dance that scenes of dancing are among the oldest and most persistent themes in Near Eastern prehistoric art, and these depictions of dance accompanied the spread of agriculture into surrounding regions of Europe and Africa. In this pathfinding book, Yosef Garfinkel analyzes depictions of dancing found on archaeological objects from the Near East, southeastern Europe, and Egypt to offer the first comprehensive look at the role of dance in these Neolithic (7000-4000 BC) societies. In the first part of the book, Garfinkel examines the structure of dance, its functional roles in the community (with comparisons to dance in modern pre-state societies), and its cognitive, or symbolic, aspects. This analysis leads him to assert that scenes of dancing depict real community rituals linked to the agricultural cycle and that dance was essential for maintaining these calendrical rituals and passing them on to succeeding generations. In the concluding section of the book, Garfinkel presents and discusses the extensive archaeological data—some 400 depictions of dance—on which his study is based.

The floor around her was covered with cornmeal "Lauren Therese!" I screamed. I had left a container of cornmeal at about the eye level of a little girl who was being encouraged to run her hands through a bucket of rice just four hours earlier [in therapy]. "Well, I see you found the cornmeal," I changed my tone and poured the yellow sandy stuff over my fingers so that it rained down in front of her face. Lauren squinted at the yellow coming down, lifted her hand so she could feel it through her fingers too, and laughed. I pulled her to her feet and we danced the messiest but most memorable dance I've ever had with my daughter, or anyone, to date. So goes the event that gave life to a book title. Based on years of hands-on experience, Dancing in Cornmeal is a parent's story, an educational manual and an inspirational collection of essays that will help you see through the eyes of a child with autism and into the hearts of the people who love her.
